More than 500 people were detained during protests around New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 2, 2026, according to Hindustan Times. The outlet also reported a temporary mobile-internet suspension near the site, metro-station closures and road restrictions. These are the outlet’s reported figures and operational details; the underlying police, telecom and metro notices were not available for independent confirmation.
What happened at Jantar Mantar on October 2?
Several groups sought to demonstrate at or reach Jantar Mantar to protest the Election Commission’s functioning and call for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. Hindustan Times reported that police stopped some people approaching the site, erected barricades and transported detainees in buses. Its account also described video clips from inside police buses.
The outlet said police had denied permission for the proposed demonstration and imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in New Delhi district. The underlying order was not available, so the legal basis and precise scope of those restrictions cannot be independently confirmed here.
