Deleting a file from a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) usually removes or changes the filesystem information that locates it; it does not necessarily erase the file’s contents immediately. Those contents may remain recoverable until later writes reuse the space, but recovery is never guaranteed—and months of recoverability is not something you can count on.

What happens when you delete a file from an HDD?

A filesystem keeps metadata that identifies files and where their data is stored. When you delete a file, the operating system commonly changes, flags, or removes some of that metadata and makes the space available for reuse. It does not normally follow that every byte of the file is immediately overwritten. Filesystem implementations differ, so the information left behind—and the chance of locating the content—varies. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) summarizes the general pattern: “Since most operating systems do not immediately overwrite deleted data by default, these data can often be at least partially recovered.” NIST, Digital Investigation Techniques: A NIST Scientific Foundation Review (2022).

That is a description of logical deletion, not a promise that the data will remain intact. It also does not mean that every operating system simply removes one pointer; the filesystem’s bookkeeping and later storage activity affect what remains.

Can you recover deleted files, including photos?

Possibly. Recovery depends on whether enough file content and locating information remain intact. If the relevant space has been reused, the overwritten data cannot be recovered from that location. A partial overwrite can leave incomplete or mixed content rather than a usable file. Filesystem metadata also matters: some filesystems preserve more information about a file’s former data locations than others.

There is no evidence-based number of days or months after which recovery is assured or impossible. A file may remain recoverable for some time if its data has not been overwritten and the needed metadata remains, but routine drive activity can change that at any point. Recovery software cannot promise to reconstruct a photo when its content has been overwritten or its remaining information is insufficient.

What to do if you just deleted an important file

  1. Minimize use of the affected drive. Avoid saving, installing, downloading, or otherwise writing data to it where practical. New writes can reuse the space occupied by the deleted file and reduce or eliminate recovery chances.
  2. Save recovered files to a different drive or device. Writing recovery output back to the source drive risks overwriting other data you are trying to recover.
  3. Keep expectations conditional. Recovery depends on the drive’s subsequent activity, filesystem metadata, and whether the file’s content remains intact; no universal recovery procedure or result applies to every system.

Why SSD deletion is different

This explanation applies to conventional HDDs, not all storage devices. On an HDD, ordinary deletion can leave magnetic data in place until its location is reused. On a solid-state drive (SSD), the operating system can send TRIM information indicating that sectors are no longer needed. The SSD may then purge those blocks as part of its flash-storage management. Microsoft describes TRIM and Unmap hints as signals that storage sectors are no longer required and may be purged: Microsoft Learn: New API allows apps to send TRIM and Unmap hints.

NIST notes that an SSD may replace TRIM-marked blocks with blocks containing only zero-valued data, and that this can happen any time after deletion and before an acquisition. SSD deletion is therefore not necessarily instantly unrecoverable, but its timing and outcome depend on the device and its state. HDD expectations should not be applied to SSDs.

Is deleting a file the same as securely erasing it?

No. Ordinary deletion generally makes space available for reuse; it is not the same operation as deliberately overwriting data to prevent recovery. Microsoft’s SDelete documentation describes a Windows utility for overwriting file data and cleaning free space, while also noting edge cases and that free-space cleaning does not securely delete file names in free space. Its behavior and limitations are described in the Microsoft Sysinternals SDelete documentation. The distinction matters: deleting a file should not be treated as proof that its contents have been sanitized.
