There is no separate “delete Google Chat account” control documented by Google. Google’s current help guidance instead offers different actions for different scopes: delete a message you sent, hide or delete a one-to-one conversation from your view, delete a space you own, turn conversation history off, or delete the entire Google Account. Choose the narrowest action that matches your goal; deleting the whole account also removes access to other Google services.
Use the decision table below before changing anything. If you might need messages, attachments, memberships, or profile information later, export your Chat data first. The exact labels can change, and work or school accounts may be constrained by an administrator.
What “delete my Google Chat account” can mean
Google Chat is part of a Google Account rather than a separately managed account with its own deletion page. That conclusion is an inference from Google’s documented controls: the help pages describe deleting content and spaces, changing history, exporting Chat data, and deleting a Google Account, but do not describe a standalone Chat-account deletion flow.
These choices have very different effects:

Choose the narrowest action that solves your problem
You sent something sensitive or incorrect
Delete that individual message. This is the only option in this guide that targets a single sent item without changing the rest of a conversation. It is irreversible according to Google Chat Help.

You only want a conversation out of sight
Hide a one-to-one conversation. Hiding changes your list, not the other participant’s access. If you contact that person again, Google says the conversation can reappear with its history in view.
You want your copy of a one-to-one history removed
Use the delete-conversation command described below. It removes the history from your view; it does not erase the other participant’s copy. This method is for a one-to-one direct message. Google says a group direct message with more than two participants cannot be deleted by this method.
You own an old project space
Delete the space only if you are its owner and everyone understands the consequence. Messages and tasks are removed. Files stored in Drive are not deleted, although the space’s permissions on those files are removed.

Turn history off where the account and conversation permit it. This is a retention setting, not account deletion. In applicable conversations, messages may be automatically deleted after 24 hours.
You no longer want the Google identity at all
Delete the entire Google Account after exporting needed data and changing the email address on services that use it. This is the broadest and most disruptive choice.
Export Google Chat data before broad deletion
Google advises reviewing and downloading information before deleting a Google Account. A Chat export can include profile information, memberships in direct messages, group messages, and spaces, along with messages and attachments. Exporting is especially important if a conversation contains records you cannot recreate.
What a personal-account export can contain
- Profile information associated with Chat.
- Membership information for direct messages, group messages, and spaces.
- Messages and attachments included in the account’s exportable Chat data.
Google’s export guidance does not guarantee that every item visible in the Chat interface will appear in every export. Treat the downloaded archive as a copy of the data Google makes available through the export process, then open it and verify the folders and files before deleting anything.

Work or school account limitations
Google notes that some group messages and spaces created by work or school account users are excluded from an individual export. If the data belongs to an organization, contact the Workspace administrator for the organization’s retention, export, or legal-hold process. An administrator may have access to organizational data that an individual user cannot export.
Practical export checklist
- Identify conversations, attachments, and memberships you may need for records or compliance.
- Start Google’s account-data export process and include Chat when the service-selection screen appears.
- Wait for Google’s export notification and download the archive from a trusted device.
- Open the archive, check that expected messages and attachments are present, and store it in a location protected by appropriate access controls.
- Only then proceed with deleting conversations, spaces, or the whole account.
Delete one message in Google Chat
Google Chat Help describes this as deleting a message you sent. Google’s statement is explicit: “When you delete a message: The message is permanently removed from your Google Account and can’t be recovered.” The command may not be available in every space or account relationship.
On a computer
- Open Google Chat, or open Chat inside Gmail.
- Open the conversation containing the message.
- Move the pointer over your message.
- Select More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Delete, then confirm.
On Android
- Open the Chat app or Chat in Gmail.
- Open the relevant conversation.
- Touch and hold the message.
- Select Delete and confirm.
When Delete is unavailable
Personal-account users may lack deletion rights in a space started by another organization or when messaging a Google Workspace account. Space settings and organizational policy determine whether a user can remove a message. If the command is missing, ask the space owner or Workspace administrator rather than repeatedly trying to delete the conversation.
What deletion does not guarantee
Deleting the message removes it from your Google Account and cannot recover it. It cannot recall screenshots, copied text, downloaded attachments, notifications already seen, or records retained under an organization’s policies. For an accidental disclosure, use the deletion command promptly and notify the relevant administrator or recipient through an appropriate channel.

Google distinguishes hiding from deleting. Both affect your Chat list and view; neither gives you control over the other participant’s copy.
Hide the conversation
Hiding removes the conversation from your list without deleting it for participants. If you send that person a new message, Google says the conversation can reappear, so hiding is best for decluttering rather than removal.
Delete the conversation from your view
Deleting a one-to-one conversation permanently hides its history from your view. The other participant keeps access to their copy. Because this is a view-level action, it does not function as a recall or universal erasure request.

Conversation-type restriction
Google says a group direct message with more than two participants cannot be deleted using this one-to-one method. For a group DM, consider hiding it, deleting individual messages you are allowed to delete, or asking the organization’s administrator about applicable retention controls.
How to decide between hide and delete
- Choose Hide when you may want the conversation available again and only need it out of the current list.
- Choose Delete when you want the history removed from your own view and accept that it will not be restored there.
- Choose neither when your real goal is to remove everyone’s copy; Google’s one-to-one controls do not do that.
Delete a Google Chat space
Space deletion is an administrative action. Only the space owner can perform it. If you did not create the space, Google points you toward leaving it instead of deleting it.
On a computer
- Open Google Chat or Chat in Gmail.
- Open the space you own.
- Select the space name to open its menu.
- Choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
What is removed
Deleting the space deletes its messages and tasks. Google says the operation cannot be recovered, so confirm the space name and export any needed information first.
What happens to Drive files
Files shared in the space are not deleted from Google Drive. However, the permissions granted through the space are removed. Check important files afterward and grant the correct people or groups access through Drive if collaboration must continue.
If you are not the owner
You cannot delete someone else’s space. Leave it if you no longer want it in your Chat list, or ask the owner to remove the space. Leaving does not perform the owner’s deletion operation.

History controls whether messages are saved; it does not delete your Google Account or provide a retroactive wipe. For personal accounts, Google says users can choose whether history is saved. In applicable conversations, messages may be automatically deleted after 24 hours when history is off.
Personal accounts
Open the conversation’s history setting and switch history off where the option is available. The exact control can vary as Google updates Chat. Turning history off affects messages covered by that conversation’s setting; it does not remove older messages that have already been saved.

Work and school accounts
Your organization determines whether you can change history. An administrator may enforce retention, preserve messages, or disable the user-facing option. If the control is missing or locked, consult your Workspace administrator.
Security and compliance caveat
Google notes that history-off does not necessarily prevent spam, phishing, or malware scanning, nor an organization’s sensitive-data scanning. Do not treat the setting as a promise that no system will process the message for safety or compliance.

Delete the entire Google Account
Use this path only when you are prepared to lose the account’s data and access across Google services. Deleting the account is not a Chat-only operation.
Before you start
- Export Google Chat and any other data you need.
- Review Gmail, Drive, Photos, Calendar, contacts, YouTube, Play purchases, and other services tied to the account.
- Change the email address on banking, government, subscriptions, password managers, and other services that use the Gmail address for sign-in or recovery.
- Check whether a family group, organization, subscription, or purchased content depends on the account.
- If it is a work or school account, ask the administrator about retention, transfer, and account-deprovisioning rules before deleting anything.
Google’s deletion path
- Sign in to the Google Account you intend to remove.
- Open Data & privacy.
- Review and download wanted data.
- Find Your data & privacy options.
- Under More options, choose Delete your Google Account.
- Read the warnings, complete Google’s verification prompts, and confirm the deletion.
Google warns that deletion removes data and access across services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, and Play. It can also affect subscriptions and purchased content. The account’s Gmail address may become unavailable for sign-in, recovery, or third-party services that still reference it.
Recovery is not guaranteed
Google says recovery may be possible for a limited time, but its help page does not specify one universal duration. Treat confirmation as final: do not delete until exports are verified and replacement contact details are working.

Your view is not everyone’s view
Hiding or deleting a one-to-one conversation changes what you see. It does not erase the other participant’s copy. Similarly, deleting your account does not guarantee removal of messages, screenshots, downloads, or records held by other people or organizations.
Space deletion differs from file deletion
A deleted space removes its messages and tasks, while Drive files remain. The permission relationship created by the space is removed, so verify access separately instead of assuming the files vanished.

History settings are prospective controls
Turning history off controls retention for covered messages and may trigger deletion after 24 hours. It is not a substitute for deleting old content, exporting records, or closing an account.
Troubleshoot common problems
I cannot find Delete next to a message
Confirm that you are acting on a message you sent and that the conversation’s space or organization allows deletion. Personal accounts may not have deletion rights in a space started by another organization or while messaging a Workspace account. Ask the space owner or administrator if policy is controlling the command.
The conversation came back after I hid it
Sending a new message to the person can restore a hidden one-to-one conversation to your list. Hide it again, or use the delete-conversation option if you want its history removed from your own view.

I deleted a space but the Drive file is still there
That is expected. Space deletion removes messages and tasks, not the underlying Drive file. Check the file’s sharing panel and reapply the appropriate permissions if the file should remain available.
History is locked or unavailable
Work or school administrators can control history. Contact the Workspace administrator and ask which retention or legal-hold policy applies. Do not assume that a missing switch means messages are being deleted automatically.
I deleted my account and now a service cannot sign in
Account deletion can remove the Gmail address used for authentication or recovery. Before deletion, update every dependent service. After deletion, use that service’s account-recovery process; Google’s limited recovery window is not a promise that third-party access can be restored.
