There is no single running cost for every dehumidifier: it depends on the appliance’s power draw, how long it actually runs at that power, and your electricity unit rate. Use (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × price per kWh to estimate the energy cost. At Ofgem’s Great Britain average Direct Debit rate of 26.32p/kWh for 1 October–31 December 2026, a 300 W unit costs about 7.9p per full-power hour and a 700 W unit about 18.4p. Your bill rate may differ.
How much does a dehumidifier cost to run per hour?
As a quick illustration, a dehumidifier drawing its full rated power continuously would cost approximately:

These are arithmetic estimates using Ofgem’s Great Britain average Direct Debit unit rate for 1 October–31 December 2026, not measured bills or a claim that a dehumidifier runs continuously at full power. The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) lists 300–700 W as a broad typical range, not as a specification for every model. Check the rating on the appliance or in its manual. Ofgem publishes the unit rates and standing charges; the rate you pay can vary by region, payment method and tariff.
How to calculate your dehumidifier’s electricity cost
Electricity use is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), sometimes called “units” on an electricity bill. The calculation is:

Cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours drawing that power × unit rate in pounds per kWh
- Find the input power. Look for the appliance’s power rating in watts (W) on its label, manual or manufacturer specification.
- Convert watts to kilowatts. Divide the watt figure by 1,000.
- Use the time it draws power. Multiply by the hours it is operating at that power. If it switches on and off, use actual running time where you can; the hours it is switched on are not necessarily hours at full power.
- Use your unit rate. Multiply the kWh by the price per kWh on your electricity bill. The standing charge is separate from the extra energy cost of running the dehumidifier.
For example, a 500 W model running at full power for eight hours uses 0.5 kW × 8 = 4 kWh. At 26.32p/kWh, that is 105.28p, or about £1.05. This illustration uses Ofgem’s Great Britain average Direct Debit rate for 1 October–31 December 2026; substitute your own tariff rate for a personal estimate. How much electricity does a dehumidifier use?
Energy use depends on both power and time: kWh = kilowatts × hours. For example, a 500 W appliance drawing that power for 24 hours uses 12 kWh. At 26.32p/kWh, that would cost about £3.16. This is a full-power arithmetic example, not a prediction of a normal day’s bill.
CSE’s guide gives the same 500 W, 24-hour example as 12 kWh, but calculates £3.24 using a historical rate of 27p/kWh. That rate is not the October–December 2026 benchmark. Use the unit price from your own bill or a current Ofgem rate for a comparable estimate.

Why your actual running cost may be different
Power rating and time at power
A higher-wattage machine costs more per hour if both appliances draw their rated power for the same length of time. But wattage alone does not tell you the energy needed to remove a useful amount of moisture. A more powerful appliance that finishes sooner can use less energy overall than a lower-powered unit that runs longer. Actual consumption also depends on how often and how long the machine operates.
Your electricity tariff
Ofgem’s 26.32p/kWh figure is a Great Britain average Direct Debit electricity unit rate for 1 October–31 December 2026, not a universal household rate. Regional rates, payment methods, fixed tariffs and multi-rate tariffs can differ. For the closest estimate, use the relevant unit rate on your bill and account for the times the dehumidifier operates if your tariff has different rates at different times.

Extraction performance and room conditions
For an efficiency comparison, consider how much water a model extracts as well as its power draw. Which? says it measures energy consumption and reports cost per litre extracted; its displayed cost-per-litre calculation uses maximum power at 21°C and 26.32p/kWh. Its tests include normal room temperature and colder spaces, so results should be compared under similar conditions. Which? reports testing 85 dehumidifiers on its page checked in July 2026. Compressor/refrigerant and desiccant machines are different product categories, and suitability and extraction can vary with room temperature. The available test information does not establish a universal running-cost advantage for either type. Compare individual models using their input power, extraction performance, test conditions and suitability for the space rather than choosing by watts alone.

How to check what your own dehumidifier uses
A plug-in electricity meter can show the appliance’s consumption over a chosen period. CSE also notes that an energy monitor can show current and historical electricity use; check whether a smart-meter in-home display you already have can provide the information you need. For a useful estimate, measure over a representative period that includes the way you normally use the dehumidifier, then multiply the recorded kWh by your unit rate.
