The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a standardized visual language for describing, specifying and documenting software and systems. It gives engineers a shared set of modeling concepts and notations, so a design drawn by one person can be read and discussed by another without relying on a single tool or programming language.
What UML means and what it is for
UML stands for Unified Modeling Language. The Object Management Group (OMG), the standards body that maintains it, describes UML as a standard for visualizing, specifying and documenting software and systems. The word “specifying” matters: UML is used to state what a system should do and how its parts relate before, or alongside, the code that implements it.
The ISO standard that covers the UML Superstructure describes the purpose more broadly. Its abstract states:
“The objective of UML is to provide system architects, software engineers, and software developers with tools for analysis, design, and implementation of software-based systems as well as for modeling business and similar processes.”
#1 Best Overall
That sentence, from the abstract of ISO/IEC 19505-2:2012 published by ISO, shows the two uses readers most often meet: designing software systems, and modeling business processes that software may support.
UML is a modeling language, not a programming language
A programming language tells a computer exactly what to execute. UML does not. It defines a vocabulary of modeling elements, such as classes, components, messages between objects, states and use cases, together with the rules for drawing them. A UML diagram is a picture of a model built from those elements. Some diagrams can be turned into code skeletons by tools, but the language itself does not run.
Rank #2
Because UML is a notation rather than an implementation, the same model can be realized in Java, C#, Python or in a hardware-software system. Its value lies in communication and documentation across teams, not in execution.

Two separate standards records are often confused. They should be kept apart.
| Item | Publishing body | What it covers | Date or status stated by the publisher |
|---|---|---|---|
| UML 2.5.1 (OMG specification) | Object Management Group (OMG) | The UML language specification, including normative text and machine-readable metamodel artifacts | Listed on OMG’s specification page as adopted in December 2017 |
| ISO/IEC 19505-2:2012 | International Organization for Standardization (ISO) | UML Superstructure, published as an ISO/IEC standard | Edition dated 2012; ISO’s record reports it was last reviewed and confirmed in 2025, so it remains current in ISO’s listing |
The December 2017 date belongs to OMG’s adoption of UML 2.5.1. The 2012 date belongs to the ISO edition. They are not the same event, and a citation should name the body that published each one. Readers who need the authoritative text should consult the OMG specification page for the current version it lists, since that page is the record for the UML specification itself.
How the UML 2.5.1 specification is organized
The UML 2.5.1 specification groups its concepts into three broad parts. The grouping helps explain what each diagram type is meant to show.
| Specification part | Clauses | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | 7 to 12 | The static parts of a system: classes, components, packages and how they relate |
| Behavior | 13 to 17 | How a system acts over time: interactions, activities and state changes |
| Supplementary concepts | 18 to 20 | Use cases, deployments and information flows |
The specification also includes annexes covering UML diagrams, diagram interchange, keywords, alternative tabular notations and XMI serialization. XMI is the XML-based format used to exchange models between tools. The annexes matter for tool builders and advanced users; a reader learning UML for the first time will spend most of their time in the clauses on structure and behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoosing the right UML diagram
UML diagrams are the visible form of the model, and the specification’s split between structure and behavior is the first thing to decide. A structural diagram answers “what parts does the system have and how are they connected?” A behavioral diagram answers “what happens, in what order, and in response to what?”
Best Value
Two further questions help narrow the choice. The first is the audience: a stakeholder reviewing requirements needs a simpler view than a developer writing code. The second is the level of detail: an early sketch can omit attributes and error paths that a detailed design must include. These two questions are practical guidance, not requirements in the UML specification. The structure-versus-behavior distinction is the one the specification itself makes.
Learning UML and finding authoritative material
For a working definition, the OMG overview page for UML is the most direct starting point. It states the language’s purpose and points to learning resources and UML certification offered in the wider community. A textbook or reference book on UML can help a learner practice drawing diagrams, but for the exact meaning of an element or notation, the OMG specification governs.
Quick Recap
- Start with the OMG overview for the purpose of UML and the list of learning resources.
- Use the UML 2.5.1 specification when a definition or notation rule must be quoted precisely.
- Check ISO/IEC 19505-2:2012 when a citation requires the ISO edition and its status.
