Special function keys are keys that trigger an operation rather than typing a character. On most keyboards they are the top-row F1 to F12 keys, and on many laptops those keys also carry a second action printed as an icon, such as volume, brightness, or microphone mute. Which action a direct press triggers depends on the computer model and on a setting called Fn Lock. The term can also mean something different in software documentation and in developer tools, so the meaning depends on where you encounter it.

What the term means in everyday use

In ordinary computer use, a special function key is any key whose job is to run a command. The standard F1 to F12 row is the classic example. Laptops add a second layer: a key that is labeled with an F-number can also be printed with a small icon that represents a hardware shortcut. Lenovo’s keyboard documentation for the ThinkPad T490s and X390 describes these keys as the place where “the special keys on the keyboard help you work more easily and effectively,” and it explains that each key can invoke either its special icon function or its standard function.

Standard F-key actions and icon actions

The F-key row has two possible jobs on a laptop:

  • Standard function: the action the key has in most software, such as F1 for help in many applications or F5 for refresh in many browsers. The exact effect depends on the program in front of you.
  • Special icon function: the hardware action printed on the key, such as changing volume or screen brightness. The action is handled by the computer’s firmware or keyboard controller, not by the application you are using.

The fact that one key can do both is the source of most confusion. A direct press of the key may do one job, while holding the Fn key and pressing it may do the other.

How Fn Lock changes a direct press

The Fn key is a modifier, similar to Shift. Its role on the F-key row depends on whether Fn Lock is on. Lenovo’s T490s and X390 documentation describes the following behavior, which is useful as a worked example even though other models can differ:

In other words, Fn Lock swaps which layer a plain press reaches. If pressing F5 changes the volume when you expected it to refresh a page, check whether Fn Lock is off. Turning it on, or holding Fn for a single press, restores the standard behavior on those documented models. Locate the Fn Lock control in your own model’s manual, because its placement varies.

Secondary actions you may find printed on keys

Question ThinkPad T490s / X390 documentation ThinkPad X1 Extreme / P1 Gen 3 documentation
Does a direct F-key press use the standard or icon action? Either, depending on Fn Lock Not stated in the cited excerpt
Is Fn Lock behavior documented? Yes, as described above Not stated in the cited excerpt
Which secondary actions are listed? Icon-printed special functions are described, without a full list in the cited excerpt Volume, brightness, microphone mute, external display control, and wireless features

Checking the behavior on your own keyboard

  1. Look at the F1 to F12 keys. If some of them carry icons, the keys have secondary functions.
  2. Find the Fn key and any key labeled as a lock. Fn Lock is the setting that decides which layer a direct press uses.
  3. Press a key with an icon once without holding Fn. Note what happens.
  4. Hold Fn and press the same key. Note whether the result changes.
  5. Compare your results with your model’s keyboard shortcut section in the manufacturer’s manual, and check whether Fn Lock is on before drawing a conclusion.

If a key does nothing in one state and works in the other, the Fn Lock setting is the most likely cause. If you need a separate keyboard, look for one with a clearly labeled F1 to F12 row and check its manual for Fn or media-key behavior.

Application-specific meanings

Outside hardware, a function key does whatever the active program assigns to it. SAP’s documentation for the ABAP Workbench, cited for version 7.40.26, lists special function keys in that environment. In that tool, F1 opens field help and F4 opens input help. Those assignments belong to the ABAP Workbench. They do not tell you what F1 or F4 does in a word processor, a browser, or a game.

The developer meaning of “special key”

Software developers use the phrase in a narrower sense. Apple’s AppKit documentation describes the NSEvent.specialKey property, which can provide the code associated with a function key or another special key in an event. This describes how an app receives the key, not what a keyboard user should expect the key to do. It matters if you are writing or debugging an application that handles keyboard input.

Across these contexts, the phrase has no single fixed definition. It refers to a hardware shortcut on a laptop, an application-defined command in a business tool, or an event code in a programming interface.
