An Oracle data query is a request that retrieves information from an Oracle Database. In practice, it is written as a SQL SELECT statement, or as a subquery nested inside another statement.

What an Oracle data query is

Oracle’s SQL Language Reference describes the common read form this way: use a SELECT statement or subquery to retrieve data from one or more tables, object tables, views, object views, materialized views, analytic views, or hierarchies. The Oracle Database SQL Reference gives a broader definition: a query is an operation that retrieves data from one or more tables or views. In that reference, a top-level SELECT is called a query, and a query nested inside another SQL statement is called a subquery.

The phrase does not name a separate Oracle product or a special language. It describes reading data from an Oracle Database using SQL. Oracle SQL Developer and Oracle Application Express are environments where people write queries and view results, but they are tools, not the definition of a query.

How a basic query is built

A query has a few core parts. The select list names the columns or expressions to return, and the FROM clause names the object that supplies the data. A WHERE clause filters rows, and ORDER BY sorts the output.

#1 Best Overall
Part Role in the query
SELECT list Columns or expressions to return
FROM Table, view, or other object that supplies the rows
WHERE Condition that keeps only matching rows
ORDER BY Sort order for the returned rows

A teaching template looks like this. Replace the placeholders with objects that exist in your schema:

SELECT column_name
FROM table_name
WHERE condition;

Oracle’s SELECT reference includes an example that returns rows from employees where department_id is 30, ordered by last_name. Real table and column names depend on the database, so the template only shows structure.

A query can also read from more than one object by joining tables, and it can aggregate results. Those are the natural next steps once the basic shape is clear.

Permissions required to run a query

You can query an object if it is in your own schema, or if you hold the READ or SELECT privilege on it. Reading through a view and using Flashback Query have additional requirements described in Oracle’s SELECT documentation. If a query fails with a privilege error, check the object’s owner and the grants on it before changing the SQL.
