Network information services is a broad term for the help a network’s users receive in finding information and handling administrative and procedural matters. In early Internet terminology, that work was associated with a Network Information Center (NIC). The phrase is not a single modern protocol, and in Unix administration the abbreviation “NIS” refers to something entirely different.

What the phrase means

RFC 1302, a February 1992 document by D. Sitzler, P. Smith, and A. Marine, defines a Network Information Center as “an organization whose goal is to provide informational, administrative, and procedural support, primarily to users of its network and, secondarily, to users of the greater Internet and to other service agencies.” Network information services, in the sense of that definition, are the services such an organization delivers: answering questions, pointing people to resources, and handling the administrative paperwork that keeps a network’s users and records in order.

The definition is historical framing, not a description of how every network team works today. RFC 1302 is an informational FYI document. It does not specify an Internet standard, and it does not survey which organizations offer these services now.

The four core functions of a NIC

RFC 1302 identifies four essential functions. Service levels and delivery methods are left to the needs of each user community.

  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
  • Provide information resources. In the 1992 framework these included both online and hard-copy material. A NIC could collect information locally or refer users to resources held elsewhere.
  • Support end users through direct contact. This is the person-to-person or help-desk side of the role.
  • Collect and maintain referral information. The NIC keeps track of where answers and contacts can be found.
  • Support the NIC infrastructure. The service’s own tools, records, and operations have to be maintained to keep the other three functions running.

The same source gives administrative examples, such as maintaining “white pages” user directories and keeping records of contacts for hosts, networks, or domains. Those examples come from the historical setting. A present-day team may do some of these tasks, all of them, or none, depending on its network.

NIC versus NOC

People often confuse a Network Information Center with a Network Operations Center. RFC 1302 separates them. A NOC is “an organization whose goal is to oversee and maintain the daily operations of a network.” A NIC supports users with information and procedure. One organization can host both functions, but they answer different questions: the NOC asks whether the network is running, and the NIC asks how a user finds out what they need and who to contact.

Comparing the related terms

The word “NIS” and the nearby technical terms create most of the confusion. The table below compares them on three axes: purpose, scope, and mechanism. The NIC and NOC rows come from RFC 1302. The Unix NIS, DNS, and LDAP rows come from RFC 2307.

Term Purpose Scope Mechanism
Network Information Center (NIC) Informational, administrative, and procedural support Primarily the network’s own users, secondarily the wider Internet and other service agencies People, information resources, referrals, and administrative processes; the definition does not prescribe specific software
Network Operations Center (NOC) Oversee and maintain daily network operations The network itself Not stated in the cited definition
Unix NIS (Network Information Service) Resolve system entities such as users, groups, hosts, and networks A single, local naming context A nameservice used by the operating system
DNS Resolve names, commonly for hosts, services, and networks Not stated as local-only in the cited RFC A common nameservice
LDAP Directory lookup Multiple naming contexts A directory service with extensible schema

Unix NIS

RFC 2307, authored by Luke Howard and published as an Experimental RFC in March 1998, uses the term “nameservice” to mean “a service, such as NIS or flat files, that is used by the operating system to resolve entities within a single, local naming context.” In that usage, NIS resolves entries such as users, groups, IP services, protocols, hosts, and networks. It is a specific piece of Unix system configuration, not the general support role described above.

  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

DNS and LDAP

DNS and LDAP are also used to look things up, which is why they are sometimes lumped into “network information” discussions. RFC 2307 treats DNS as a common nameservice, typically used for hosts, services, and networks. It describes LDAP separately as a directory service that supports extensible schema and multiple naming contexts. Neither technology is a synonym for the NIC support role.

Why the data matters

RFC 1355, published in August 1992, notes that much of the information handled by Network Information Centers is directory information that points to people, organizations, and resources on a network. It discusses privacy controls and formal accuracy guidelines for those databases. Any directory that lists personal or organizational contacts raises the same questions today: who can see each record, and how is it kept correct?

How to read the term in practice

When someone asks what network information services are, start with the broad definition: user support, information resources, and referrals around a network. Then check the context. If the term appears in a Unix server configuration, in account lookup, or in a directory setup, “NIS” almost certainly means the Unix nameservice. If the discussion is about who answers questions or manages user records for a network, it means the NIC-style role.

The sources here establish definitions and terminology. They do not establish how many organizations run NIC-style services now, and the RFCs cited are from 1992 and 1998. Readers who need a current picture of a particular network should check that network’s own documentation.

Key points to remember

  • Network information services are the information and user-support functions around a network, historically associated with a NIC.
  • A NIC’s functions include information resources, direct user support, referral records, and infrastructure support.
  • A NOC runs daily network operations. It is a separate function, even when one organization performs both.
  • Unix NIS is a specific nameservice for system entities, not the general support role.
  • Directory information about people and organizations makes privacy and accuracy relevant.
