“Musk chip company” is not an official company name. The phrase most likely refers to Tesla, Inc., which documents its own design of custom AI inference chips for its Full Self-Driving software. No separate, Musk-owned chip company appears in the sources reviewed for this explainer.
Why the phrase points to Tesla
Elon Musk leads Tesla, and Tesla is the company that has publicly described chip-design work tied to Musk’s vehicle and AI projects. Tesla’s own AI and Robotics page says the company builds AI inference chips that run its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The page names several design tasks: floor-planning, timing and power analysis, and silicon validation before chips go into production vehicles. This is Tesla’s description of its own work, not an independent test of the chips’ performance or the scale of production. (Tesla, AI and Robotics)
Tesla’s FY2025 Form 10-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes “our own in-house, custom designed inference chips” used to accelerate neural networks. The same filing describes expansion of the Cortex training cluster and a collaboration with Samsung to manufacture advanced semiconductors for AI inference and training in the United States. The phrase is easier to understand once you separate three ideas that are often blended together.
#1 Best Overall
- The company: Tesla, Inc. is the legal entity. Musk is its leader, as described in Tesla’s Investor Relations biography (Tesla Investor Relations, Elon Musk) and Tesla’s company biography (Tesla, Elon Musk biography).
- The activity: Designing inference chips is one part of Tesla’s broader vehicle and AI work. It is not a separate business in the sources reviewed.
- The manufacturing: Designing a chip does not mean the company fabricates it in a facility it owns. Tesla’s filing explicitly discusses a manufacturing collaboration with Samsung, so chip design and chip fabrication should not be treated as the same thing.
How to describe it accurately
If you need a short, defensible description for an article, report, or search answer, use wording that matches the evidence:
- “Tesla designs in-house AI inference chips for its Full Self-Driving software, according to its own AI page and its FY2025 Form 10-K.”
- “Tesla has described a semiconductor manufacturing collaboration with Samsung.”
- Avoid “Musk’s chip company” as a proper noun. It is an informal label, not a corporate name.
Limits of this answer
The sources support a narrow claim: Tesla documents its in-house AI inference chip design. They do not establish a standalone chip business owned by Musk, and they do not confirm chip performance, volumes, or the full list of suppliers. A reader who meant a different company, such as a chip maker Musk has invested in or advised, would need a separate source for that company. The word “Musk” alone does not identify one.
