A metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) is a layered structure with a conductive gate, a thin insulating oxide layer, and a semiconductor body. In a MOSFET, a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor, the voltage on the gate sets how easily current flows through a channel between the source and drain.
What the three words describe
The name reads from the top of the stack downward. The top layer is the gate, a conductor that receives the control voltage. Beneath it sits an oxide, an electrical insulator that separates the gate from the semiconductor. The bottom layer is the semiconductor, usually silicon, which holds the region where current can flow.
The oxide is the part readers most often misunderstand. It is an insulator, not a conductor. No meaningful steady current passes from the gate into the semiconductor through it. Instead, the gate’s electric field reaches through the oxide and changes the charge at the semiconductor surface.

Applying voltage to the gate creates an electric field across the oxide. That field attracts or repels charge carriers near the surface of the semiconductor. When enough charge gathers there, a conducting channel forms between the two terminals called the source and the drain. Changing the gate voltage widens, narrows or removes that channel, which changes how much current the device passes.

This is why a MOSFET is described as a voltage-controlled device. The current between the source and drain is governed by the field at the gate, not by a current the gate pushes into the channel. The gate itself draws very little steady current, which is one reason the structure is so widely used.
MOS, MOSFET and CMOS are not the same thing

When a reader sees “MOS” in a textbook, it usually refers to the structure. When they see “MOSFET,” it refers to the transistor. When they see “CMOS,” they are looking at circuitry that combines both device types.

Why the “metal” and “oxide” labels can mislead
The names date from early devices that used a metal gate, a silicon dioxide layer and a silicon body. Modern chips depart from that literal recipe. Gates are often made of polysilicon or of metal-containing stacks. The insulating layer is often a high-permittivity dielectric rather than plain silicon dioxide. The industry still uses the MOS name because the operating principle is the same: an insulated gate whose field controls a channel.
So the accurate way to describe a MOS device is by its function. It has a gate, an insulator between the gate and the semiconductor, and a channel whose conductance the gate field controls. Whether the gate is literally metal is a secondary detail.

A simple way to picture it
Think of the gate as a control electrode separated from a semiconductor by a very thin insulating barrier. Voltage on the control electrode changes the charge near the surface on the other side of the barrier. That change opens or closes a conducting path between two other terminals. The insulator keeps the control signal from leaking into the path, while the field still reaches across it.
Common points of confusion
- “The oxide conducts the signal.” It does not. It insulates, and the signal works through its field.
- “MOS means a specific transistor.” MOS names the structure. MOSFET names the transistor built on it.
- “Every MOS device has a metal gate and silicon dioxide.” Modern devices often substitute other materials while keeping the MOS name.
- “CMOS is a different structure.” CMOS is a way of wiring complementary MOSFETs into circuits.
