The iPhone 13 Pro Max is Apple’s large-screen Pro smartphone, introduced on September 14, 2021, alongside the iPhone 13 Pro. It pairs a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion, the A15 Bionic chip, and a three-lens 12 MP rear camera system.
What the iPhone 13 Pro Max is
The name identifies a specific model rather than a generation. “iPhone 13” is the family name, “Pro” marks the higher-end tier within it, and “Max” denotes the largest screen in that tier. Apple released it in 2021, and its own launch wording described the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max together as “the most pro iPhone lineup ever.” That phrase is Apple’s promotional language and should be attributed to Apple if quoted.

Display and ProMotion
The screen is the defining feature of the model. Its 6.7-inch diagonal is the largest in the 2021 Pro lineup, and its resolution of 2778 × 1284 pixels gives a pixel density of 458 ppi, both per Apple’s specifications page.
ProMotion is Apple’s name for adaptive refresh. Apple’s launch announcement describes a 10–120 Hz range, meaning the display changes its refresh rate with the content on screen rather than running at one fixed speed. Apple’s specifications page lists the top rate as 120 Hz. The adaptive behaviour is what Apple means by “intelligent display” in its launch wording.
Processor and Neural Engine
The iPhone 13 Pro Max uses Apple’s A15 Bionic chip with a six-core CPU, a five-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine for machine-learning tasks. At launch, Apple gave the Neural Engine a figure of 15.8 trillion operations per second. That number comes from Apple’s own 2021 announcement and was not an independently tested result.

Apple also said at launch that the iPhone 13 Pro Max would last up to two and a half hours longer in a day than the iPhone 12 Pro Max. That is a manufacturer comparison made in 2021. It describes Apple’s test conditions, not a battery-life guarantee for a phone in use today.
Camera system
Rear lenses
The rear system has three 12 MP cameras: Telephoto, Wide, and Ultra Wide. Apple lists 3x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out, and a 6x optical zoom range across the lenses. Those figures describe the optical hardware on Apple’s specification page, not digital zoom.
Capture modes and video formats
Apple lists macro photography, Apple ProRAW, Cinematic mode, and ProRes video among the model’s capture options. Video recording includes Dolby Vision HDR up to 4K at 60 fps.

ProRes has a storage-dependent limit. On most storage sizes, Apple lists ProRes recording up to 4K at 30 fps. On the 128 GB model, ProRes is limited to 1080p at 30 fps. If you plan to shoot ProRes footage, check the capacity before you buy.

Storage options are 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. The phone measures 160.8 × 78.1 × 7.65 mm and weighs 240 g, according to Apple’s specifications page. Those dimensions matter if you are comparing it with another phone or checking whether an existing case or accessory will fit.
Water and dust resistance: what IP68 means here
IP68 is a rating from a laboratory test under the IEC 60529 standard. Apple specifies that the iPhone 13 Pro Max can withstand a depth of up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under those test conditions.

The rating does not mean the phone is waterproof in every situation. Apple’s rating describes the phone when new and tested under the stated conditions. Damage, wear, seal condition, and age can all affect a particular device, so a rating does not guarantee protection for an older or damaged unit.
Charging and connector
- Connector: Lightning, not USB-C.
- MagSafe: wireless charging up to 15 W, according to Apple’s specifications page.
- Qi: standard wireless charging up to 7.5 W.
Check what is in the box or the product listing before you assume a charger or cable is included. Apple’s power and cable contents have changed across the iPhone line, so the listing for your specific unit is the reliable reference.
Battery figures
Apple’s specifications page gives these figures: video playback up to 28 hours, streamed video playback up to 25 hours, and audio playback up to 95 hours. Apple notes that actual results vary with use and with battery condition. Battery health declines with age, so a used phone will not match these figures unless its battery is in good condition.

Software support
The iPhone 13 Pro Max launched with iOS 15. This article does not establish which iOS release is the latest supported for the model as of October 2026. Check Apple’s current iOS compatibility information before you buy, because support lists change with each release.
