There is no single number that makes audio “high-resolution.” In common usage, the term refers to digital formats whose sample rate or bit depth exceeds the CD reference of 44.1 kHz and 16 bits, according to the Audio Engineering Society (AES). The Japan Audio Society (JAS) uses a stricter, product-focused test: its Hi-Res Audio logo requires digital capability of 96 kHz/24 bit or higher, analog performance of 40 kHz or higher, and a listening evaluation. Both statements are valid, but they answer different questions, so the right threshold depends on who is setting it and for what purpose.
What “high-resolution” means in common usage
The AES describes high-resolution audio as a digital format with sample rates and bit depths above those of CD audio, which it lists as 44.1 kHz and 16 bits. That is a descriptive convention for talking about formats. It is not a legal standard, and it does not say that anything above the CD reference is audibly better.
Two parameters are involved, and each is measured separately:
- Sample rate is the number of samples captured or played back per second, usually written in kilohertz (kHz). A higher rate extends the frequency range a format can represent.
- Bit depth is the word length used for each PCM sample. A higher bit depth gives a finer level resolution and more dynamic range in the digital domain.
A label such as “24-bit/96 kHz” therefore describes two properties of the file or stream. It does not describe the whole playback chain, which includes the decoder, the digital-to-analog converter (DAC), the amplifier, and the transducers.

Which sample rate and bit depth combinations count
Because the common usage compares each parameter to the CD reference, a format can qualify by exceeding either one. The JAS summary of examples from the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) shows how this plays out:
| Example format | Sample rate | Bit depth | Classification in the JAS summary of JEITA examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example A | 44.1 kHz | 24-bit | High-resolution (bit depth exceeds CD) |
| Example B | 48 kHz | 24-bit | High-resolution (bit depth exceeds CD) |
| Example C | 96 kHz | 16-bit | High-resolution (sample rate exceeds CD) |
| Example D | 96 kHz | 12-bit | Not counted as high-resolution in these examples |
| Example E | 32 kHz | 24-bit | Not counted as high-resolution in these examples |
The table shows that the broad label is not the same as the logo standard discussed below. Under the JEITA-based examples, 96 kHz/16-bit qualifies, while 96 kHz/12-bit does not, which means the bit depth still has to be at or above the CD reference. The examples are illustrations drawn from the JAS summary rather than a complete rule set.

The JAS Hi-Res Audio logo: a stricter product standard
The JAS Hi-Res Audio logo applies to products, not to file formats in general. Its definition, which JAS dated as updated on November 9, 2022, sets requirements that differ from the broad usage above.

| Analog performance | Frequency response of 40 kHz or higher for the specified analog stages, including headphone performance |
| Listening evaluation | A manufacturer listening-evaluation process is required |
Because the logo is a product certification, 96 kHz/24-bit appears here as a requirement for a device chain, not as a universal definition of “high-resolution.” Applying the logo criteria to a general format question would be a category error.

Sample rates in professional production
AES5-2018, a recommended practice, advises 48 kHz for PCM program origination, processing, and interchange. It recognizes 44.1 kHz for certain consumer applications and 96 kHz where a higher bandwidth or more relaxed anti-alias filtering is needed.
The practical lesson is that professional workflows choose a rate for engineering reasons tied to the job. A higher rate is not treated as a default requirement. The AES High Resolution Audio committee describes resolution in terms of bandwidth, dynamic range, time, and spatial acuity. It also notes that system elements, signal processing, and perceptual factors all shape the result.

Does a higher rate mean better sound?
Neither the AES nor the JAS material establishes that a higher sample rate or bit depth produces an audible improvement for listeners. The AES overview says formats are delivery modes and that signal quality and human perception raise broader questions than a sample-rate and bit-depth label can answer. Neither source cites a listening-test result showing how often listeners can tell formats apart, so readers should treat a logo or a file specification as evidence of capability, not of perceived benefit.

Wireless Hi-Res claims
JAS separates its Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo from the wired and general logo. The wireless definition lists the codecs certified for the wireless logo, and any product carrying it must also meet the non-wireless Hi-Res Audio requirements. Because the codec list and logo criteria can change, check the current JAS page before naming a supported codec in a product description or purchase decision.
Checking whether a setup meets a given rate
If you want to know whether a particular file, service, or device chain can deliver a high-resolution rate, work through these checks in order:
- Identify the file’s sample rate and bit depth separately, using the file properties or the service’s stated stream specification.
- Confirm the player or streaming app passes that rate and depth without resampling. Many apps have an output or bit-perfect setting that should be reviewed.
- Check that the DAC supports the same sample rate and bit depth, and that the USB or other interface connecting it is compatible.
- If the goal is a logo-level claim, compare the device against the current JAS Hi-Res Audio criteria, including the analog stages and listening evaluation.
- Decide whether the result matters for your listening. The standards describe what the chain can carry, not what you will hear.
Each step tests a different link in the chain. Passing one does not establish that the others pass, so verify the whole path before assuming a high-resolution result.
