A Bitcoin block reward is the total amount a miner may claim for a valid block: the block subsidy (newly issued bitcoin) plus the transaction fees paid for transactions included in that block. The subsidy follows a fixed reduction schedule; fees vary from block to block.
What does “Bitcoin block reward” mean?
Bitcoin’s developer glossary defines the block reward as the sum of the block subsidy and the fees paid by transactions included in the block. In other words, it is the maximum reward available to the miner through that block’s special first transaction, not a fixed payout that is identical for every block. Bitcoin Developer Documentation: Glossary
Block reward vs. block subsidy vs. transaction fees
| Term | What it means | How it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Block reward | The subsidy plus fees from transactions included in that block. | Varies with both the subsidy schedule and the fees in the block. |
| Block subsidy | New bitcoin issued under Bitcoin’s issuance schedule. | Falls by half every 210,000 blocks, approximately every four years. |
| Transaction fees | Bitcoin paid by transaction senders to incentivize miners to include their transactions. | Depends on included transactions and demand for limited block space. |
Bitcoin.org says the subsidy began at 50 BTC in 2009 and is reduced at each halving. The 210,000-block interval is a protocol schedule figure, not a guarantee that a halving occurs on a particular calendar date. Bitcoin.org: Vocabulary

Fees are not a fixed charge set by a company. They are associated with competition for block space, so the fees collected differ depending on which transactions a block includes and network demand. Bitcoin.org: Bitcoin transaction fees

How does a miner claim the reward?
Each block begins with a special transaction called the coinbase transaction. It is used to claim the block subsidy and collect fees from the transactions in that block. The transaction is invalid if it claims more than the available reward. Bitcoin Developer Documentation: Block Chain reference
The subsidy and fees are different sources of value: the subsidy creates new bitcoin under the issuance schedule, while fees are bitcoin paid by transaction senders. The Bitcoin whitepaper describes the difference between a transaction’s inputs and outputs as a fee added to the block incentive. Bitcoin whitepaper

When can a miner spend the reward?
A coinbase output cannot be spent until at least 100 blocks have been added after the block containing it. This maturity delay helps prevent miners from spending rewards from blocks that later become stale and are removed after a fork. Bitcoin Developer Documentation: Block Chain developer guide
Why isn’t every block reward the same?
- The subsidy changes on schedule: it is reduced by half at each 210,000-block halving interval.
- Fees depend on block contents: each miner’s block can include different transactions with different fees, and demand for block space changes.
Bitcoin.org describes the protocol’s supply schedule as capped at 21 million coins. That cap does not mean each block pays the same amount: the subsidy schedule and variable transaction fees determine the reward available for an individual block. Bitcoin.org: Vocabulary
