An Amazon phone scam is a call from someone pretending to be Amazon or another trusted party, usually to pressure you into paying money, giving up personal or financial details, sharing a one-time passcode, or allowing remote access to your device. Amazon classifies these calls as part of its broader category of impersonation scams, which can also arrive by email, text message, or social media.

How an Amazon phone scam works

The caller’s goal is to make you act before you have time to check. The call usually claims something has gone wrong with an order, a Prime membership, or your account, and then offers a fast fix that involves giving the caller something they want. That something might be a payment, a login code, your bank details, a gift-card code, or access to your computer or phone. Because the caller can make the number on your screen look like Amazon’s, the number alone tells you nothing.

Warning signs that a call is not from Amazon

Amazon’s official guidance on fake calls and impersonation scams lists several patterns that should make you stop and verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pressure to act immediately, such as a deadline or a threat that your account will be closed today.
  • Requests for personal or financial information, including bank details, card numbers, or passwords.
  • Requests for payment outside Amazon, or any demand to pay people or businesses with gift cards.
  • Requests to buy gift cards and read out their codes to “unlock” an account or resolve a problem.
  • A claim about an unexpected order, charge, or cancellation that you do not recognize when you check your own account.
  • A request for a one-time passcode (OTP). Amazon’s fake-call guidance states that legitimate Amazon representatives will never ask for OTP codes over the phone.
  • A request to install software or give someone control of your device.

Caller ID is not proof of identity. Amazon warns that fraudsters can spoof caller ID and pose as customer service or tech support, so a familiar-looking number, a recognized voice, or accurate details about a recent order do not confirm that the caller works for Amazon.

Common call scenarios

Fake order or purchase

The caller says a purchase was made on your account and asks you to cancel or confirm it. The confirmation step is often the trap: it may lead to a request for payment details, a software install, or gift cards. To check, open Your Orders in the Amazon app or on the Amazon website you type in yourself. If the order is not listed, you have your answer.

Prime or account emergency

The caller claims a Prime membership fee is overdue, or that your account is frozen, suspended, or about to be deleted. They then ask for payment or account details to keep it active. Check your membership and account status directly through Amazon’s own app or website, not through any link or number the caller gave you.

  • SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.

Tech-support call

The caller says your device has a virus or your account has a fault, and asks you to install remote-access software or let them take control of the screen. Amazon states that it will not ask for remote access to a personal device to register an account to a device. Any caller who asks for control of your computer or phone should be treated as a scammer.

Gift-card payment demand

The caller asks you to buy gift cards from a store and provide the claim codes to unlock your account or settle a supposed balance. Amazon says customers should not pay people or businesses with gift cards, and that its representatives will not ask customers to buy gift cards to unlock an account. Once codes are read out, the money is usually very hard to recover, so do not buy them under any circumstances from a caller.

What to do during the call

  1. End the call. Amazon’s fake-call guidance says plainly, “It’s ok to hang up.” You do not owe a caller a conversation.
  2. Do not share passwords, OTP codes, bank or card details, gift-card codes, or access to your device, and do not follow instructions from the call.
  3. Do not call back the number the caller used. Instead, open the Amazon app or type the Amazon website address yourself.
  4. In the app or on the website, check Your Orders, your payment methods, and your membership status. Contact Amazon Customer Service through the official channel listed there.
  5. If the call still worries you after verifying, treat it as a scam and move on to reporting and account protection below.

If you already shared something

What you should do next depends on what the caller obtained. Work through the item that applies to you, and do all that apply.

Amazon password entered on a suspicious site or to a caller

Change your Amazon password promptly. Amazon recommends changing it immediately if you entered it on a suspected malicious site, and it recommends enabling Two-Step Verification on your account so that a password alone is not enough to sign in. Do this from your Amazon account settings after you have ended the call, using the Amazon app or a browser you navigate to yourself.

Bank or card details

Contact your bank or card issuer through the phone number printed on your card or on its official website, not through a number from the call. Reporting the call

Report the call through Amazon’s Report a Scam guidance. For suspicious calls or texts, Amazon points to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s ReportFraud website. Amazon’s report flow asks what was exposed, separating account details, banking information, other information, and remote access, which helps it give you the right next steps. Keep in mind that Amazon may send an automatic confirmation but cannot personally respond to reports sent by email.

What the evidence does and does not establish

  • Amazon’s guidance is current, official, and consistent across its fake-call, impersonation, and reporting pages, but it does not publish a dated prevalence or loss figure for Amazon phone scams. Treat any specific statistic you see elsewhere with caution unless it names its source and date.
  • The reporting route described here is the U.S. FTC site. The available guidance did not establish equivalent government reporting routes in other countries, so readers outside the United States should check with their national consumer-protection or fraud authority.
  • Amazon’s guidance does not describe how a particular scam caller obtained your number or account details, so a caller showing personal information should not, on its own, be taken as evidence that the call is legitimate.

The practical rule is the same in every case: a real Amazon contact can wait while you check through the app or website, and a caller who will not wait is the warning sign.
