For quick, ready-made DeFi protocol metrics, DeFiLlama is the clearest fit. For custom onchain analysis using SQL and decoded blockchain data, consider Dune. They solve different jobs and can be used together. Token Terminal is another adjacent option to investigate if you need standardized financial metrics, but the available comparison evidence is not enough to call it a tested substitute.
There is no verified basis here to describe these tools as a Product Hunt ranking, launch, or endorsement. This is a use-case comparison, not a definitive ranking of every DeFi analytics service.
What DeFiLlama is best suited for
DeFiLlama centers on pre-aggregated DeFi metrics and protocol-level views. Its official tools page describes custom dashboards, protocol and chain comparisons, watchlists, spreadsheet access, token liquidity, yield tracking, and bridge transaction data. Its broader navigation includes metrics such as total value locked (TVL), fees, revenue, volume, yields, stablecoins, and token unlocks. See DeFiLlama’s tools page.
DeFiLlama describes its data as open-source and says its focus is accurate data and transparent methodology. That is the provider’s description, not an independent accuracy assessment; for a particular metric, check its definition and how it is calculated. See DeFiLlama’s about page.
#1 Best Overall
DeFiLlama also offers free and paid subscription and API plans, but plan terms and displayed prices can change. Check the official pricing page for current access, billing, and limits before choosing a plan.
How to choose between DeFiLlama and Dune
| Decision factor | DeFiLlama | Dune |
|---|---|---|
| Data model | Pre-aggregated protocol and DeFi metrics. | Decoded blockchain data that users can query; Dune’s comparison page describes custom SQL and dashboards. |
| Best fit | Quick protocol-level views and common DeFi categories. | Bespoke analysis, inspecting transactions, and questions that predefined metrics do not answer. |
| Scope | Strongest fit is DeFi metrics and related tools. | Dune positions its data environment for broader onchain categories as well as DeFi. |
| Workflow | Browser dashboards and spreadsheet access are among the tools DeFiLlama describes. | Custom SQL and dashboards support a query-driven workflow; check Dune’s current plan and product details for access limits. |
Dune’s comparison page describes DeFiLlama as focused on pre-aggregated TVL and protocol metrics and presents Dune as a way to query decoded data and build custom dashboards. Dune also makes claims about its chain coverage and how its coverage compares with DeFiLlama’s. Those are vendor-authored comparisons, not an independent audit; confirm current coverage and capabilities with each provider. See Dune’s DeFiLlama comparison.
Choose DeFiLlama for a quick protocol-level view
Start with DeFiLlama when the question is already represented by its available metrics—for example, comparing protocol or chain views or checking a common DeFi category. Its pre-aggregated approach avoids having to build each query from raw or decoded records.
Choose Dune when the question needs a custom query
Consider Dune when you need to inspect transaction-level data, define your own transformations, or investigate activity beyond a ready-made DeFi metric. The trade-off is that a custom query requires more work and judgment than opening a prepared dashboard. Dune’s SQL and data descriptions come from Dune itself, so verify that the required chain, dataset, and access are currently available before building a workflow around them.

Can you use DeFiLlama and Dune together?
Yes. Use DeFiLlama to get a fast protocol-level view, then use Dune when you need to investigate a question or construct an analysis that the prepared metrics do not answer. Treat the outputs as different analytical products, not automatically interchangeable measurements: similar labels can have different definitions, coverage, or calculation methods.
- Find the relevant protocol-level metric or comparison in DeFiLlama.
- Identify the specific question the prepared view leaves unanswered.
- Check Dune’s available data and metric definitions, then write or adapt a query for that question.
- Compare definitions and coverage before interpreting the results together.
Where Token Terminal fits
Dune’s alternatives directory lists Token Terminal under financial analytics and describes it as standardizing financial metrics for crypto investors. That makes it an option to investigate if comparable financial metrics are your main need. The listing is not a full independent feature comparison, so confirm current capabilities, data definitions, and pricing directly with Token Terminal before choosing it. See Dune’s alternatives directory.

What to verify before choosing an analytics service
- Metric definitions: Check what a measure includes and how it is calculated. Do not assume that similarly named metrics from different products are directly comparable.
- Coverage: Confirm that the protocols, chains, and types of activity you need are included today. A provider’s stated coverage may change.
- Flexibility: Decide whether prepared metrics meet the need or whether you require SQL, custom transformations, and bespoke dashboards.
- Workflow and access: Check whether browser dashboards, spreadsheet access, APIs, or other integrations are available on the plan you intend to use.
- Current cost and limits: Review each provider’s live pricing, billing terms, plan gates, and API limits. Do not rely on an old displayed price or comparison.
- Methodology: Inspect the underlying calculation or adapter where available. DeFiLlama describes its methodology as transparent; Dune characterizes DeFiLlama metrics as community-maintained adapters in its own comparison.
Is there a definitive “best” DeFiLlama competitor?
The available evidence supports comparing tools by task, not naming a universal winner. DeFiLlama is the direct choice for quick pre-aggregated DeFi views; Dune is the more relevant option when custom SQL and decoded onchain data are central. Token Terminal is an adjacent candidate for financial-metrics needs, with less comparative evidence available here.
