DeepSeek’s Android app reached No. 1 on the US Google Play Store on January 28, 2025, according to TechCrunch. That is a historical chart result—not a statement about the app’s current rank.
What the No. 1 ranking meant
The milestone referred to DeepSeek’s position on the US Play Store chart during a surge of attention in January 2025. It describes a chart position at that time; it does not establish the app’s present rank or how it ranks in other countries or stores. TechCrunch reported the ranking on January 28, 2025.
How many downloads did DeepSeek have?
TechCrunch reported that analytics firm AppFigures estimated more than 1.2 million Google Play downloads and more than 1.9 million Apple App Store downloads since DeepSeek’s mid-January 2025 launch. These are analytics estimates for the period described, not figures published as exact totals by either app store.

Google Play’s listing displays a “5 million+” install band. That rounded store-provided band is a separate measure, not a confirmation of AppFigures’ estimate or a precise download count. Google Play’s listing can change over time.

Its official announcement identified the app as DeepSeek and advised users: “Download only from official channels to avoid being misled.” On Google Play, the app is listed as “DeepSeek – AI Assistant” and described as free. DeepSeek’s app announcement provides its official-channel guidance.
What was known about privacy and availability?
DeepSeek’s privacy policy, last updated February 14, 2025, describes the information collected when people use its services and says personal data is stored in the People’s Republic of China. Read the privacy policy for the company’s stated practices; a policy disclosure alone does not establish how every user’s data is handled in every circumstance.

On January 30, 2025, Italy’s data protection authority documented that the app was unavailable from Apple’s and Google’s Italian stores while it raised questions about data handling. That dated, country-specific account does not establish present availability in Italy or elsewhere, nor does it amount to a general legal assessment. The Italian authority’s decision sets out its contemporaneous position.
What the ranking does—and does not—show
A top chart position and a burst of downloads show substantial app-store attention. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate that DeepSeek’s model was better than competing models, or prove claims about its training costs or capabilities. App popularity and model performance are different questions.
