Bloomberg reported on August 21, 2019, that DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman had been placed on leave. A DeepMind spokeswoman said he was “taking time out right now after 10 hectic years,” but did not give a reason for the leave. Reporting at the time linked the news to controversy over projects he had led; that does not establish that any one project or dispute formally caused the decision.
What DeepMind said when the leave was reported
Bloomberg described Suleyman as leading DeepMind’s applied division, which sought practical uses for the lab’s research, including in health and energy. The report said he had been placed on leave amid controversy over some projects he led. DeepMind’s spokeswoman offered a different, limited formulation: “Mustafa is taking time out right now after 10 hectic years.” The statement did not explain why he was put on leave. Bloomberg’s August 21, 2019 report is the contemporaneous source for both the event and the company’s comment.
Why was Mustafa Suleyman placed on leave?
The public explanation at the time did not say. Bloomberg reported controversy over projects Suleyman led, but its account does not establish that a specific project was the formal reason for the leave. Later reporting described complaints about his behavior and an outside investigation; those accounts add context, but do not establish which allegations were substantiated or prove that they were the stated cause of the 2019 decision.
Why DeepMind Health had already drawn scrutiny
Before the leave report, DeepMind Health’s work with the UK National Health Service had become a separate point of public debate. In November 2018, The Guardian reported criticism that transferring DeepMind Health into Google conflicted with earlier assurances about patient data and ended the unit’s independent review panel. Google said the reorganization would allow its Streams app to scale globally. DeepMind said patient data remained under its partners’ control and was protected by audit and access controls, contracts and data-protection law. The dispute concerned data governance and oversight; the reporting does not establish it as the cause of Suleyman’s leave.
The Guardian quoted a 2016 assurance written by Suleyman: “We’ve been clear from the outset that at no stage will patient data ever be linked or associated with Google accounts, products or services.” That statement addressed patient-data handling, not his later leave. The Guardian’s November 14, 2018 account describes the criticism and the companies’ responses.
What happened to Suleyman after DeepMind?
On December 5, 2019, Bloomberg reported that Suleyman would leave DeepMind for an unspecified role at Google. The report documented a subsequent move, not an explanation for the earlier leave. Bloomberg’s December 5, 2019 report did not specify the role.

What later reporting says about an investigation
A retrospective account by The Information said complaints about Suleyman’s behavior led to an outside law-firm investigation, whose results were not made public. The Information also reported that a joint Google and DeepMind statement said Suleyman undertook “professional development training to address areas of concern.” The published information cited here does not disclose the investigation’s findings or establish which allegations were substantiated. These later details should therefore be kept distinct from the limited public explanation given when the leave was announced.
