Temple is not currently a mind-reading device or a proven pilot-screening tool. Deepinder Goyal has described both as possible future uses: he said the wearable might help assess whether pilots are fit to fly, while thought-to-text could be years away and arrive in a later generation. The capabilities described today center on BrainFlow, a feature intended to track changes associated with blood flow to the brain.
What did Deepinder Goyal say Temple might do?
In comments reported by India Today on 5 October 2026, Goyal said he would like Temple to be used on pilots to check whether they are fit to fly and by the Air Force to identify who is fittest for a mission. Those remarks describe an intended or potential use, not an established aviation screening capability.
Goyal also said a research team was working on “thoughts to text,” but that the work appeared to be a few years away and might belong to the third or fourth version of Temple. That is a future-facing development statement; it does not mean the current device can understand a person’s intention, transcribe thoughts, or open an app through thought alone.

India Today describes Temple as a wearable attached at the side of the head, with a PPG sensor. Goyal said it can be worn with glasses and that its grips are designed to stay in place during activities including sleep. These are reported product descriptions, not the result of an independent inspection.

The reporting characterizes BrainFlow as tracking changes associated with blood flow to the brain. It does not describe Temple as directly reading neural signals. A signal associated with blood flow is not the same thing as decoding thoughts, and by itself does not establish whether someone is medically fit for a particular task.
What does the reported validation study show?
India Today and Moneycontrol, both reporting on 5 October 2026, summarized a second validation study involving 60 participants across three physiological challenges. Goyal reported correlations of 0.84 to 0.91 between Temple readings and changes in brain blood volume measured against time-domain NIRS. In a head-down tilt challenge, he reported a correlation of 0.91 for brain blood volume and 0.49 for scalp blood volume.

These are reported correlations, not measures of diagnostic accuracy or proof that Temple can classify a pilot as fit or unfit. The reports said the preprint had been submitted for peer review; they do not establish that peer review has concluded or that the findings have been independently replicated.
Why do those results not establish fitness to fly?
A comparison with a reference measurement can provide evidence that a sensor tracks a particular signal under study conditions. It does not, on its own, show that the device can make reliable decisions across people, circumstances, and operational settings. Pilot fitness screening would require evidence for that specific intended use, not only an association with a blood-volume measure.

Experts quoted in earlier coverage also urged caution about what a local wearable reading can establish. In a 6 January 2026 report by The Indian Express, neurologist Praveen Gupta said a device attached at one location cannot reliably measure blood flow across both sides of the brain or all arteries, especially deeper and smaller ones. The report also noted that clear scientific proof of exactly what the device measures and its accuracy across conditions had not been established at that time.
Neurosurgeon Arun L. Naik told NDTV on 21 September 2026 that Temple cannot replace clinical investigation. He said it had not been proven to diagnose dementia, predict brain ageing, detect inadequate cerebral perfusion, or establish that gravity is reducing brain blood supply. These are the expert’s reported assessments, not a regulator’s determination.
