A dedicated graphics card is a graphics processor separate from a computer’s integrated graphics, typically with its own graphics memory. It is also commonly called a discrete GPU. The term describes how graphics hardware is arranged; it does not guarantee that a laptop’s GPU is removable or upgradeable.
What is a dedicated graphics card?
A dedicated graphics card is graphics hardware separate from the graphics processing built into a computer’s processor or system. In technical terms, the separate processor is a discrete GPU; “dedicated graphics card” is a common name for that arrangement. Intel describes the terms as interchangeable in ordinary usage: Intel’s GPU explainer.
A GPU, or graphics processing unit, is the processor that handles graphics rendering and other parallel workloads. A graphics card—also called a video card—is the hardware board or unit that carries a GPU and the supporting components needed to operate and connect it. People often use “GPU” and “graphics card” to mean the same thing, but they are not technically identical.

How is dedicated graphics different from integrated graphics?
Integrated graphics are built into the processor or system, while discrete graphics use separate graphics hardware. The usual memory distinction is that integrated graphics share system memory with the CPU, whereas a discrete GPU commonly has its own dedicated graphics memory, often called VRAM. Intel outlines the distinction in its integrated-versus-discrete graphics support article; AMD also describes integrated graphics using shared system memory in its guide to UMA frame buffer size.

| Graphics type | Where the graphics processor is | Typical memory arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated | Built into the processor or system | Shares system memory with the CPU |
| Dedicated/discrete | Separate from the processor’s integrated graphics | Commonly has separate graphics memory |
These are typical arrangements, not a guarantee about every computer’s implementation. In particular, a memory figure shown in software is not always proof that a computer has physical VRAM on a separate card. Intel says its integrated graphics driver may report a fictitious “dedicated video memory” amount for application compatibility; see its Intel graphics memory FAQ, last reviewed January 13, 2026.
Does “dedicated” mean the card can be replaced?
No. Discrete graphics can appear in desktop PCs, laptops, and small form factor computers. In a desktop, the GPU may be on an add-in card, but the word “dedicated” alone does not establish that a component is user-replaceable. Laptop and compact-system designs vary, so check the exact model’s service documentation before assuming you can upgrade its graphics hardware. Intel’s support article, last reviewed September 4, 2024, discusses discrete graphics across these form factors: Intel Support.

When does a dedicated graphics card matter?
A separate GPU can suit some demanding graphics workloads better than integrated graphics. It can also use more power and generate more heat; discrete GPUs generally need dedicated cooling to reach maximum performance. Those tradeoffs do not mean every user needs one. The right choice depends on the programs and tasks involved, as well as the computer’s power, cooling, space, and compatibility limits. Intel discusses the workload and heat considerations in its GPU overview.
