A decorative lazy Susan works better when diners need to share dishes or condiments; a fixed centerpiece tray works better when you want a stationary display that you can lift and carry. The decision comes down to how you use the table, how much room the piece needs, and whether you want the contents to rotate. A lazy Susan can also be decorative, so the options are not strictly utility versus looks.
How the two options differ
A lazy Susan is a tray or platform on a rotating base. Turn it to bring shared food within reach of people seated around the table. IKEA says the turning function on its SNUDDA makes serving easier, while Pfaltzgraff describes its rotating tray as a way to make contents accessible with a spin.
A centerpiece tray, by contrast, is useful as a defined display surface that stays put. It can organize decor or items you plan to pick up and carry together. But check the construction rather than relying on the word “tray”: some trays can be sold with an optional turntable, so the name alone does not establish that it is fixed.
Choose based on how you use the table
For shared serving, choose rotation
If meals often include several shared bowls, condiments, or other items that people need to reach, a lazy Susan can reduce the need to pass items around. Rotation is most helpful when multiple diners will use the contents during the meal.

For a stationary display or easy pickup, choose a fixed tray
If the main purpose is to group a deliberate arrangement of decor, or to lift several items at once, a fixed tray is the more direct fit. It does not need to turn, though you should verify that the model has no rotating base or optional turntable.
If you want both, consider a decorative lazy Susan
Rotation and appearance are compatible. Minotti describes its revolving tray as suitable either for serving diners or as a decorative element. Housewares International also catalogs a glass turntable for decorative centerpiece, appetizer-serving, or cake-plate use. These examples show possible uses, not a guarantee that every lazy Susan will suit every table or display.

Check fit and clearance before buying
Measure the usable tabletop area, then account for place settings, glassware, and other decor. The tray needs enough surrounding room to rotate without bumping into them; Williams Sonoma advises considering clearance for comfortable rotation. Also consider how much of the table the tray itself will occupy.

Product sizes vary. For reference, IKEA lists its SNUDDA at 15 inches in diameter, while Pfaltzgraff lists its Square Lazy Susan Serving Tray as 18 inches square and 2¾ inches high. These are individual product examples, not a complete size range or a recommendation that either will fit your table. TableCraft’s commercial acacia round-server brochure gives 13-, 15-, and 18-inch examples; its publication date is not established.

Compare materials, construction, and care
Check the care instructions for the exact product rather than assuming that trays made of similar materials can be cleaned the same way. For example, IKEA specifies a solid rubberwood disc with acrylic lacquer, a thermoplastic elastomer foot ring, and a steel fitting; its instructions say to wipe it with a damp cloth. Pfaltzgraff lists mango wood and wrought-iron handles for its square serving tray and also says to wipe it with a damp cloth. TableCraft says its commercial acacia server is hand-wash only. None of those instructions makes wood trays generally dishwasher-safe.
Material and scale also affect the look. Minotti offers marble and glass finishes for its furniture-scale revolving tray, listed in 80, 100, and 120 cm diameters. Those dimensions describe a design reference, not a typical dining-table size recommendation. For a smaller glass example, Housewares International’s 2021 catalog lists a 13-inch tempered-glass turntable.

- Choose a lazy Susan if rotating shared food or condiments within reach is the priority.
- Choose a fixed tray if you mainly want a stationary display or a surface you can lift with its contents.
- Measure first and leave room for rotation as well as place settings and other objects.
- Check the product details for its base construction, dimensions, material, and cleaning directions.
