DecisionPrint is a design for a decision-memory interface that helps architecture teams answer one question: why did we make this choice? It is meant to recover the circumstances and evidence behind an earlier decision, compare the original premises with present conditions, and follow the decision into implementation and outcomes. The description comes from a first-person design account published on DEV Community by Ram Pawar, not from an independent evaluation, so this article explains what the workflow is meant to do and where the available evidence stops.
The questions the workflow is built around
The design is organised around a literal question, “Why did we do this?”, and a set of follow-up questions that a reviewer would ask of any old decision:
- What did we decide? The recorded choice, along with the constraints that shaped it.
- What assumptions supported that decision? The premises that made the choice reasonable at the time.
- Which assumptions have changed? A comparison of those premises with current conditions.
- What evidence supports the original reasoning? Links back to the architectural material the decision relied on.
- What happened after the decision? The implementation, system changes, incidents, and postmortems that followed.
How the workflow answers those questions
The author describes the tool as a decision-memory UI built on Hindsight agent memory. Its purpose is to connect past decisions with the constraints behind them, show where premises have drifted, link claims to original evidence, and connect decisions to later work. Each of these functions maps to one of the questions above.

Retaining constraints, not only the final label
A decision record that says only “we chose X” is hard to revisit. The design keeps the constraints that informed the choice alongside the choice itself, so a later reader can see what the team was optimising for when it decided.

Premise drift: comparing then with now
Premise drift is the gap between the conditions a decision assumed and the conditions that hold today. The author presents drift as a visible measure, rendered as a drift gauge, so a reader can see which premises have moved rather than inferring it from memory.
The author’s main example concerns Kafka. An earlier decision rejected Kafka in a context with a small number of consumers and no replay requirement. A later context involved more consumers and a replay requirement. In the author’s illustration, the premises behind the original rejection no longer hold, so the old answer should be reopened rather than carried forward. This is an illustrative example from the author’s account, not a verified customer case.

- Premium Quality Notebook for Work: Golden spiral binding is sturdy and flexible, with easy-to-turn pages. Hot-stamped cover is water-resistant and not easy to bend. Bonus Bookmark and Pockets. Perfectly hold up well to frequent transfers in and out of backpacks, briefcases, and cars.
- Fight Ink-bleeding & Great Size: The high-end 100gsm paper could prevent ink bleeding through or feathering, handle double-sided writing and most daily use pens pretty well. The office/business work notebook measures 7.5"x 10"(similar to B5 size), Generous size provides ample space to jot down your meeting notes.
- Each 160 Pages Per Book: Provide ample space for note taking & planning and with the date section at the top for tracking them. With 160 pages for meeting minutes, the manager notebook will cover more than half a year, even in daily use. Also provides index pages for organizing this office planner.
- Better Tool Drives Better Meetings: The hassle of organizing the chaotic meeting notes VS this professional meeting notebook. Definitely a step up! Everything is neatly zoned on each page makes it a breeze to fill them out and ensure all you need are accounted for.
Evidence references
Each evidence reference opens the underlying architectural excerpt together with its recorded date. That lets a reviewer check the source a claim depends on. An attached source does not settle whether the interpretation built on it is correct. A reviewer still has to judge whether the excerpt supports the conclusion drawn from it.
The outcome chain
The outcome chain links a decision to implementation, then to the system change it produced, then to any incident and the postmortem that followed. The author cites a case in which a decision to remove automated database backups is traced through to database corruption and a postmortem. The chain shows the sequence of events; it does not establish that the removal caused the corruption. Treat each link as a lead to investigate.

Architecture as the author describes it
The project account describes a deliberate boundary between presentation and memory. The author’s design choices are reported by the author and have not been independently reviewed.
A typed facade between UI and memory
The frontend talks to the backend through a typed FacadeProtocol rather than reaching into vector indices or model prompts. The UI requests decision, evidence, timeline, and outcome data. The backend owns memory retention and recall. The same interface can run against a deterministic local backend or a Hindsight-backed memory engine. The author’s argument is that this boundary makes the presentation layer easier to swap or inspect, although no comparative engineering study is cited to support that claim.

Streamlit and generated SVG graphics
The application is built with Streamlit. Rather than adding a large JavaScript visualisation stack, the author generates SVG primitives for drift gauges, progress rings, sparklines, and timeline tracks.

Access states at the UI boundary
Typed ScopeError responses are surfaced as explicit access states in the interface, so a user sees that a record is restricted rather than seeing an empty or broken view. The author treats visible permission failures as part of the user experience, not only as a backend concern.

Comparing DecisionPrint with enterprise decision automation
DecisionPrint is easy to confuse with enterprise decision-management software, but the two address different jobs. IBM’s Introducing Decision Intelligence documentation describes an enterprise decision-automation lifecycle built from a Decision Assistant, Decision Designer, and a runtime. IBM describes Decision Designer as a collaborative place to develop and test services, and its Using Decision Designer documentation covers decision diagrams, task models, rules, decision tables, and ruleflows. The comparison below uses those documents. It does not suggest any product affiliation or equivalence between the two.
| Axis | DecisionPrint (as described by its author) | IBM Decision Intelligence (as documented by IBM) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Retrieving historical decision context and reasoning over decision history | Authoring, testing, deploying, and executing governed decision logic |
| Evidence model | Links from a decision to original architectural excerpts and their recorded dates | Decision inputs, rules, decision tables, and service artifacts organised in Decision Designer |
| Temporal reasoning | Premise drift compares original constraints with present conditions; the outcome chain links later implementation and incidents | Not stated in the IBM pages cited here |
| Governance | Access boundaries shown as typed access states; no audited governance model is described | The cited pages describe a runtime; review, access, and deployment controls are not covered in them |
| Evaluation | A design description only; no published validation or customer evidence | Product documentation; the cited pages do not include validation studies |
Applying the workflow’s questions to an old decision
The questions are useful even without this tool. A team reviewing an older architecture decision can work through them in order:
- Retrieve the decision record and write down the constraints behind it, not only the choice that was made.
- Open each piece of evidence the decision relied on and note its recorded date.
- For each premise, state whether it still holds today and which current evidence shows that.
- Where a premise has changed, decide whether the decision still fits or needs a new decision record.
- Follow the outcomes forward, treating each link between a change and an incident as a lead to check rather than a settled cause.
What the evidence does and does not establish
The available material is a first-person design account and an indexed listing, so the claims here are limited:
- No performance, accuracy, adoption, or business-impact figures for DecisionPrint have been published in the material reviewed for this article.
- No independent validation, customer evidence, or security audit is available. The access-state handling is the author’s reported design.
- The Kafka and database-backup examples are illustrations from the author’s account. They are not verified customer cases.
- The DEV Community listing under the exact title is dated September 28, 2026, as shown in its author listing. The first-person project write-up, Building a decision-memory UI with Hindsight, is indexed as published in October 2026; its exact day is not confirmed in the indexed copy.
- Current pricing, availability, and licensing for Hindsight and Streamlit are not established here. Check each project’s official terms before planning to use them.
DecisionPrint is best read as a well-defined design for keeping decision context alive, rather than as a proven product. Its value depends on whether a team records the premises and evidence behind its decisions well enough for the questions to be answerable later.
