Director Michael Sarnoski and cinematographer Pat Scola were reported scouting locations in Iceland for the live-action Death Stranding movie. Footage described in the report shows waterfalls and broad stretches of green moss, but the sites are being considered—not confirmed as filming locations. Filming is expected in 2027, with Iceland and Northern Ireland reported as planned regions.
What the Iceland scouting update shows
MeriStation reported on October 7, 2026, that Sarnoski was in Iceland scouting for the A24 and Square Peg production, citing a social post dated October 6. Cinematographer Pat Scola was also reported to be part of the scout. The report describes footage of waterfalls and extensive green moss, but does not identify the specific sites or say they have been selected for the film. MeriStation’s October 7 report
The landscapes may feel at home beside the games’ stark environmental imagery; that is an interpretation, not confirmation of how the movie will look or which locations it will use. Location scouting helps a production assess potential settings. It does not, by itself, establish where filming will take place.

MeriStation reported that filming is expected to begin in 2027 and that production is planned across Iceland and Northern Ireland. The report does not give a specific start date, and the locations shown during the Iceland scout should not be treated as final choices. These are reported plans and expectations, not a confirmed production schedule.

What story will the movie tell?
The film is intended to tell an original story in the Death Stranding universe, centered on new characters rather than directly adapting Sam Porter Bridges’ journey. In a June 2026 interview with /Film, Sarnoski described having room to explore the world with his own characters and tell a new story adjacent to the games. Read Sarnoski’s interview with /Film
That approach leaves room for the movie to connect with the established setting without making it a straightforward retelling of the game’s plot. Reports or speculation about familiar characters appearing should not be mistaken for confirmed roles.

Has the cast been announced?
No. MeriStation said the cast had not been officially announced as of its October 7, 2026 report. Norman Reedus’s reported interest in returning is not confirmation that he has joined the movie. Earlier reporting also discussed new characters and script revisions, but did not establish a cast announcement. ComingSoon’s June 19, 2026 update
