First check for an existing cloud or computer backup. If one exists, you may be able to restore it to a replacement tablet without turning on the old one. If the only copy is on a tablet that will not boot, connecting it to a computer is not a general way to extract the data: you may need to get the original device working, and any repair or recovery is uncertain.
Start by checking for a backup
Before troubleshooting or sending the tablet for service, sign in to the same account on the replacement device and check whether a usable backup exists. A backup can restore only what was included in it; it does not necessarily contain every local file, app, or app dataset.
For an iPad
An iPad backup may be in iCloud or on a computer. Apple documents restoring a computer backup to a new or erased device through Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. If the computer backup is encrypted, you need its password. See Apple’s instructions for restoring a backup.

Google says Android backups can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS, but not every app backs up all of its data. Photos and videos may be available through Google Photos if they were backed up there. Downloads and other files stored only on the tablet should not be assumed to be covered. Check Google’s Android backup and restore guidance for the available backup and restore options.

Google’s setup process can restore an existing account backup without the old tablet, but you need access to the Google Account and may be asked for the old device’s PIN. Restore options and compatibility vary by device and Android version; a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a device running a lower version. Google’s transfer instructions explain the setup flow.
Work out whether it is dead or just has a damaged screen
A tablet with a broken display or unresponsive touch screen may still be running. Direct transfer is possible only if you can unlock it and complete any prompts needed to authorize the transfer. A data cable cannot bypass the lock screen, provide authorization, or power up a tablet that will not start.

For Android, Google’s direct transfer flow uses the old device and its PIN. It supports cable or Wi-Fi transfer, although a cable adapter may be needed depending on the ports. If the screen prevents you from unlocking the device or responding to prompts, the documented transfer flow may not be usable. The alternative is restoring a backup that already exists in your Google Account. Review Google’s Android device-transfer steps.
For an iPad, a computer backup is a way to move data only if that backup already exists. Connecting a locked iPad to a new computer does not guarantee the computer can access its contents. Apple’s instructions cover restoring a saved backup to the replacement device, not bypassing a locked iPad. See Apple’s backup-transfer instructions.

If an iPad may be frozen or out of charge
Try Apple’s non-erasing startup checks before considering recovery or service. Charge the iPad; Apple says it may need up to an hour. Then try the force-restart sequence for the specific iPad model. If it remains unresponsive, Apple advises seeking service. These checks can make the original device accessible again, but they do not retrieve data by themselves. Follow Apple’s iPad response and startup guidance for the model-appropriate steps.
If an iPad is stuck during startup and a computer offers an Update option, Apple recommends trying Update as a troubleshooting step. Update is different from Restore: Apple warns that “Restore reinstalls iPadOS and erases all of your data.” Do not choose Restore if you need local-only files and do not have another copy, unless you accept losing them. If the only copy is on a tablet that will not boot
Do not start with a factory reset, Restore, or any other erase-and-reinstall option. If the data matters and no backup exists, ask a reputable repair or data-recovery provider whether they can diagnose the original device while preserving its local data. Tell them explicitly that the data is the priority, and do not authorize a reset or replacement of the main board without understanding the risk to data stored on the device.

Repair may be necessary before transfer, but neither Apple’s support guidance nor Google’s backup instructions guarantee that a repair will recover local data. Whether recovery is possible depends on the tablet model and the fault. Apple advises service in certain iPad startup failures and when relevant buttons are broken; that is not a promise of data recovery. Apple’s startup guidance and recovery guidance describe those support routes.

Choose the safest route for your situation
