Choose dbdiagram.io if you want to define and version a schema in DBML; choose DrawSQL for a visual canvas, SQL imports across several listed database engines, and paid real-time collaboration; consider dbdiagramr for quickly visualizing pasted SQL or a PostgreSQL schema. The right choice depends on your starting point, required database dialect, export format, privacy needs, and plan limits—not on a single “best” tool.
Product and pricing details below were checked against vendor pages on October 7, 2026. Features, prices, and limits can change. This comparison is based on vendor documentation, not hands-on testing.
How the three tools differ
| Tool | Best fit | Starting point | Outputs and collaboration |
|---|---|---|---|
| dbdiagram.io | Code-first schema design and editing | DBML, with SQL import and generation described by the vendor | Image and PDF export; real-time editing is described for Personal Pro. Sharing options and access depend on the workflow. |
| DrawSQL | Visual canvas work and importing existing SQL | SQL import; vendor lists MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and MariaDB | SQL, Laravel, and JSON export are listed; real-time multiplayer is paid-plan functionality. |
| dbdiagramr | Quickly exploring a pasted SQL schema or PostgreSQL database | Paste CREATE TABLE statements or connect a PostgreSQL database, according to its product page | Interactive diagram and SVG/PNG downloads are advertised; the page says no account is required. |
These are vendor-described capabilities, not verified compatibility results. If you are working with a production schema, check that the exact dialect, import path, constraints, and export format meet your needs before committing to a workflow.
Which tool fits your workflow?
Choose dbdiagram.io for a text-first schema workflow
dbdiagram.io centers its workflow on DBML, a text format for describing database schemas. That can suit developers who want schema changes to be readable and manageable as text rather than drawing every element on a canvas. The vendor also describes SQL import and generation, plus image and PDF exports. Check the supported import and generation behavior against your database engine and schema before relying on it for a migration or round trip.
#1 Best Overall
Its collaboration documentation describes real-time editing in Personal Pro, invited colleagues, and editable public diagram links. A public link may expose the diagram to anyone who obtains it, so do not treat an unlisted URL as equivalent to private access control. Review the current collaboration documentation and plan terms if your schema is sensitive or your team needs restricted access.
Choose DrawSQL for a visual canvas or multi-engine SQL import
DrawSQL is the more natural fit if you want to work directly on a diagram canvas or bring in an existing SQL schema. Its feature page lists MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and MariaDB for SQL import, and SQL, Laravel, and JSON as export options. Its DDL export documentation specifically names MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server and describes output containing tables and constraints. Do not assume every listed import engine has a matching DDL export path; confirm the exact direction and dialect you need in the SQL export documentation.
The vendor says real-time multiplayer is available on paid plans. If live co-editing is a requirement, check the current plan terms and user limits rather than assuming the free tier includes it.
Consider dbdiagramr for a quick PostgreSQL-focused view
dbdiagramr’s product page describes pasting CREATE TABLE statements or connecting a PostgreSQL database, then navigating an interactive diagram and downloading SVG or PNG files. It also describes the service as free and requiring no account. Those are vendor claims; the page reviewed presents a PostgreSQL-focused database connection, not broad multi-engine coverage. The available information does not establish that its connection or exports are suitable for every schema, privacy requirement, or production workflow.

Database engine and round-trip fidelity
Match the tool to the exact database engine and direction of travel: importing an existing schema, generating DDL, or both. An engine appearing in an import list does not prove that its SQL can be exported in the same dialect. Validate representative tables, keys, and constraints before using an exported schema as executable migration input.

Privacy and access
Decide whether diagrams may be public, whether access must be restricted to named collaborators, and whether a shared link is acceptable. For dbdiagram.io, its collaboration documentation specifically notes editable public diagram links and the risk of a leaked URL. The reviewed information does not establish a security audit or provide a basis for treating any of these tools as approved for sensitive schema data.
Deliverable and limits
Choose based on what you need to hand off: editable DBML, SQL/DDL, a diagram image, PDF, JSON, or Laravel output. Then check diagram, table, and user caps against your real workload. For DrawSQL’s free tier, the listed diagrams are public and limited to 15 tables; confirm that both conditions are acceptable before using it.
How to interpret conflicting comparison claims
For prices and features, use the vendors’ current product pages, pricing pages, and documentation rather than relying on a third-party comparison. The dbdiagramr comparison article reviewed for this topic contains pricing and platform claims that conflict with the vendors’ current pages, including the claims about DrawSQL’s platform and prices. Treat that article as unverified for those details; the relevant sources are the comparison article and the first-party DrawSQL pricing page, dbdiagram.io pricing page, and DrawSQL features page.
