To reach a safe first practice session, you do not need a new computer or a dedicated security laptop. Run Kali Linux as a virtual machine (VM) on the computer you already own, keep it isolated from your everyday files and networks, and practise only against applications built for training. Kali is the toolkit you work from. It does not teach cybersecurity by itself, and the lessons come from the exercises you choose.

Decide three things before you install anything

The right setup depends on three answers you should write down first:

  • Your host operating system. This is the Windows, macOS, or Linux system you already use. It determines which hypervisor (the software that runs the VM) you can install.
  • Your available memory and disk space. A VM takes memory and storage away from your host, so the host needs headroom as well as the guest. Check how much RAM and free disk your host has after your normal apps are open.
  • Your learning focus. Web application testing, network practice, and defensive work (monitoring and log analysis) use different tools and different targets. A beginner can start with one focus and widen later, but the first lab should match the first goal.

Choose a virtualization route

Kali’s official installation documentation covers guest VM installs for several hypervisors: VMware, VirtualBox, Hyper-V, UTM, and QEMU/LibVirt. The documentation lists these options but does not rank them, so choose based on your host:

  • VirtualBox and VMware are the most common choices for beginners who run Windows, Linux, or Intel-based Macs. Both are documented by Kali, and both support the snapshot feature described later.
  • Hyper-V is built into some editions of Windows. Its availability depends on your Windows edition and on whether virtualization is enabled, so check your edition before relying on it.
  • UTM is documented for macOS users, including Apple Silicon machines.
  • QEMU/LibVirt suits Linux users who are comfortable managing VMs from the command line.

Whichever you pick, read the matching page in Kali’s installation documentation (updated 2025) because steps change between hypervisor versions.

Budget resources for the guest and the host

Kali publishes minimum figures for its installs. Treat them as starting points, not a buying guide:

  • Default desktop (Xfce with the kali-linux-default metapackage): at least 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk, according to Kali Linux Documentation (updated 2025).
  • Resource-intensive tools such as Burp Suite: Kali’s guide says these may call for at least 8 GB RAM.
  • Low-end, no-desktop SSH server: Kali lists far smaller figures (128 MB RAM, with 512 MB recommended, and 2 GB disk). This is not a sensible setup for a graphical practice lab, so do not use it as your benchmark.

These numbers apply to the guest. Your host still needs enough memory and processor capacity to run your normal applications alongside the VM. If your machine struggles, give the VM less memory and close heavy programmes while you practise, rather than installing a larger system.

Install Kali as a virtual machine

Kali’s installer guide demonstrates a fresh guest VM, and this is the route most beginners should use. The general sequence is below. Exact menu names differ across hypervisors and versions, so follow the labels in your hypervisor’s documentation.

  1. Download the Kali installer image or the prebuilt virtual machine image from Kali’s official download pages, and verify the checksum if the site provides one.
  2. Create a new virtual machine in your hypervisor. Assign the memory and disk sizes you planned above; for a graphical lab, start at 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk, and increase memory if your tools need it.
  3. Attach the Kali image to the virtual machine’s optical drive or virtual disk, following your hypervisor’s instructions for the image type.
  4. Start the VM and complete the Kali installer. Choose the guest VM disk as the install destination, not your host drive.
  5. Reboot, sign in, and update the system before adding any tools.

Direct installation is a different route. Installing Kali straight onto a physical disk can erase existing data on the disk you select. Back up important files first, and confirm the destination carefully. Kali’s guide also notes that Secure Boot must be disabled for the installer kernel in the path it describes. Change firmware settings only if your chosen installation path requires it. A USB drive is needed only for installer media on a physical install; it is not needed for a guest VM install.

Keep the lab isolated

Isolation protects your files and other devices from the tools and the practice targets. Follow these rules from the first day:

  • Install vulnerable training applications only inside the VM, never directly on your host.
  • Use the hypervisor’s network settings to limit what the VM can reach. Check the mode you chose rather than assuming a mode is isolated. Official documentation for the apps covered below does not establish that any particular VM network mode is perfectly isolated, so verify your hypervisor’s settings and whether the target listens on other interfaces.
  • Do not share folders between the host and the VM unless you need a specific file. Shared folders are a common way for mistakes to spread.
  • Do not disable your host firewall or antivirus to make a tool work.

Only test systems you are authorized to test

Practice against systems you own, or systems whose owner has given you written permission. Do not probe public websites, school or work networks, or other people’s devices, even if a tool makes it easy. Deliberately vulnerable applications are the safe place to make mistakes and learn. Use the targets below, and keep them on your local lab.

Start with a training target

OWASP Juice Shop

OWASP Juice Shop is a deliberately insecure web application for training, demonstrations, and capture-the-flag (CTF) events. Its challenges cover the OWASP Top Ten and other application flaws, and the application tracks your progress on a built-in scoreboard. Juice Shop is free and open to everyone, which makes it a good first web target. Treat it as a practice site: do not expose it to the internet and do not reuse its code in production software.

OWASP WebGoat

OWASP WebGoat is an interactive teaching application for vulnerabilities common in Java-based web applications. It is a good second step once you understand the basics, because its lessons are arranged around specific flaws and explanations. WebGoat warns that the running machine is extremely vulnerable and advises disconnecting from the internet while using it. In its default configuration, it binds to localhost, which limits access from other devices. Keep it that way unless you have a specific reason to change it and understand the exposure. In WebGoat’s own words: “You should disconnect from the Internet while using this program.”

Make the setup repeatable

A clean baseline lets you reset after a broken exercise instead of rebuilding from scratch. After the first successful install and update, take a snapshot of the VM if your hypervisor supports snapshots. This is a practical recommendation rather than a step the official Kali pages require, so check your hypervisor’s documentation for the exact menu. Before each new practice session, restore the clean snapshot if you want a fresh starting point.

TECH STORE ON Kali Linux Bootable USB + Linux Command Cheat Sheet Mousepad – Cybersecurity Workstation Kit
  • Bootable Kali Linux Environment – No installation required
  • Large Linux Command Reference Mousepad (Desk Size)
  • Ideal for Cybersecurity Labs & Training
  • Plug & Boot on Compatible Systems
  • Complete 2-Item Bundle – Functional & Practical

Keep a short lab notes file with:

  • Host operating system and version
  • Hypervisor name and version
  • Kali version and the date you installed it
  • Target application name and version
  • Network mode and any port forwarding you added

When something breaks, these notes show what changed, and they let you reproduce a working setup on another day.

Troubleshooting checks

  • VM will not start: confirm that hardware virtualization is enabled in your computer’s firmware settings and that no other hypervisor is blocking it.
  • VM is very slow: reduce the guest’s memory or processor allocation, close heavy host applications, and confirm you meet the guest minimum above.
  • Training app will not load: check the address and port in the application’s documentation, and confirm the VM’s network mode allows traffic between the browser and the target.
  • Installer fails on a physical install: recheck the destination disk, and confirm Secure Boot settings only if your installation path calls for it.

Once the VM boots, the target runs locally, and you have a clean snapshot, your environment is ready for a first lesson.
