Dawn of War IV is announced as a return to mass battles and base-building, with four faction-specific campaigns linked by one story; Dawn of War III emphasizes three factions, elite squads, giant war machines and alternating campaign missions. That is a comparison of the games’ official descriptions, not a verdict from playing them: as of October 4, 2026, Dawn of War IV is still unreleased and scheduled for December 3, 2026.

At a glance: what is different?

Area Dawn of War IV Dawn of War III
Announced gameplay emphasis Returns to “mass-battle, base-building roots,” according to Warhammer Community. This describes the announced direction, not a confirmed hands-on experience. Official Steam copy highlights colossal battles, giant war machines, elite squads with special abilities and powerful faction abilities.
Named campaign factions Blood Ravens Space Marines, Orks, Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus. Space Marines, Orks and Eldar.
Campaign structure Four mechanically distinct factions, each with a unique campaign feeding into one overarching narrative; official Steam news announces 70+ missions playable solo or with a friend. A three-faction campaign told through missions that alternate among its forces.
Setting Kronus, a planet previously seen in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. The official store description identifies the three campaign forces; a directly comparable setting description is not stated there.
Modes named in official descriptions Competitive multiplayer, Last Stand and Skirmish; Annihilation and Domination are named as selectable matchmaking modes. Online PvP; Relic’s post-release announcements document added maps, Elite units, skins and custom-game options.
Platform and status Steam for Windows PC; scheduled for December 3, 2026. Commander Edition early access is listed for November 30. PC on Steam; released April 27, 2017.

The feature descriptions above come from official publisher, developer and store materials. They establish announced structure and positioning, not comparative quality, balance, playtime or how either game feels in practice.

How does the gameplay direction differ?

Dawn of War IV: a stated return to roots

Warhammer Community says IV returns to “mass-battle, base-building roots” and highlights an expanded Sync Kill system. This is the clearest official statement of how the new game is intended to relate to the series’ earlier approach. It does not establish the precise balance between building, army control and combat in the finished game.

Dawn of War III: elites, abilities and war machines

III’s official Steam description foregrounds elite squads with special abilities, giant war machines and powerful faction abilities alongside large battles. These are emphases in its store positioning; they do not justify reducing the game to a claim that it had no base-building.

Sega Warhammer 40,000 Dawn Of War III - PC
  • Unleash the Giants - Play the most famous characters in Dawn of War history
  • Destructive Abilities: Use powerful super abilities to destroy the battlefield
  • Online War: Use co-op to get issues online

Because IV has not launched, the evidence supports comparing design intent rather than asserting that one game is more tactical, more demanding or more enjoyable. A reliable player-experience comparison requires the released game.

Which factions are in each game?

The clearest roster change is the announced lineup: IV names Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus, while III’s campaign description names Eldar. The four announced IV factions are:

  • Blood Ravens Space Marines
  • Orks
  • Necrons
  • Adeptus Mechanicus, making their series debut in IV

III’s official campaign forces are Space Marines, Orks and Eldar. The shared Space Marines and Orks provide continuity, while the announced lists differ on the other factions. Faction count alone does not show how strategically varied or well-balanced either game is.

How are the campaigns structured?

Dawn of War IV: four campaigns tied to one story

Deep Silver describes four mechanically distinct factions, each with a unique campaign that contributes to one overarching narrative. Official Steam news announces 70+ missions playable solo or with a friend. That is a mission count, not a published estimate of hours or a measure directly comparable with III’s campaign length.

Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising - PC
  • Put new units for the Space Marines, Ork, Eldar, and Tyranid armies and two new last stand heroes to work for you on the battlefield.
  • This expansion allows you to continue your fight against the enemies of the Emperor and use your squads’ wargear, abilities, and experience to battle Chaos in 15 new missions.
  • New ice planet graphics set increases visual diversity and adds 7 new multiplayer maps while six-player online multiplayer and a raised level cap of 30 allows for even more glory and devastating abilities.
  • New single player mechanic allows you to equip incredibly powerful equipment that corrupts your squad and will guide the story towards or away from the corrupting influence of Chaos.
  • Swear loyalty to the Chaos Gods and play as the bloodthirsty Chaos Space Marines in multiplayer battles against both Chaos Rising and Dawn of War II owners.

The conflict takes place on Kronus, which the official trailer update identifies as a planet first seen in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. The announcement calls IV’s campaign the series’ “largest campaign ever,” but does not provide a measurement or baseline for that publisher claim.

Dawn of War III: alternating forces

III’s official store description presents a campaign that alternates missions among its three factions: Space Marines, Orks and Eldar. That differs structurally from IV’s announced separate campaign for each of four factions, unified by one story. The available descriptions do not establish a fair comparison of campaign hours or quality.

What modes and multiplayer features are announced?

Deep Silver lists competitive multiplayer, Last Stand and Skirmish for IV, and says many modes support co-op as well as single-player. Developer news also names Annihilation and Domination as selectable matchmaking modes. Those are announced mode options, not evidence of player population, long-term support or competitive health.

III’s Steam page lists online PvP. Relic’s 2017 announcements document post-launch additions including multiplayer maps, Elite units, skins and custom-game options. The documented post-release additions do not establish how active its multiplayer is now.

When and where can you play them?

Dawn of War IV is listed for Steam on Windows PC, with launch scheduled for December 3, 2026. Deep Silver lists November 30 as the start of Commander Edition early access, three days before the scheduled launch. The official Steam news feed records that the date moved to December 3 from an earlier September target, so older September announcements are out of date.

Dawn of War III is a PC game on Steam and its store page gives April 27, 2017 as its release date.

What can you conclude before IV launches?

The announced differences are substantial in direction, roster and campaign structure: IV is positioned around a return to mass battles and base-building, introduces Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus to its announced lineup, and plans four faction-specific campaigns connected by one narrative. III’s official description instead stresses elite units, abilities, war machines and alternating missions among three factions.

Those facts explain what has changed on paper. They do not yet settle whether IV’s combat, campaign, balance or performance is better. Until it releases, treat those as open questions rather than established comparisons.
