Dawn of War: Definitive Edition is a modernized collection of the original real-time strategy game and its expansions; Dawn of War IV is a new sequel with a new campaign and four announced launch factions. They are separate releases, not two editions of the same game. As of October 7, 2026, Dawn of War IV is scheduled to launch on December 3, 2026, so players looking for a game they can play now should choose based on the classic content in Definitive Edition.

Is Dawn of War 4 a remaster?
No. Dawn of War IV is a new sequel, not a remaster, remake, or upgrade to Dawn of War: Definitive Edition. Definitive Edition brings the original Dawn of War and its expansions into one updated package. Relic design director Philippe Boulle described that collection as bringing four campaigns, nine factions, multiplayer, skirmish, and over 100 maps together for modern machines.

Those changes update the classic games; they do not make the package the next chapter in the story. Warhammer Community’s interview with Boulle also describes the original game’s design around customizable squads and an economy built on capturing map points.
#1 Best Overall
- Put new units for the Space Marines, Ork, Eldar, and Tyranid armies and two new last stand heroes to work for you on the battlefield.
- This expansion allows you to continue your fight against the enemies of the Emperor and use your squads’ wargear, abilities, and experience to battle Chaos in 15 new missions.
- New ice planet graphics set increases visual diversity and adds 7 new multiplayer maps while six-player online multiplayer and a raised level cap of 30 allows for even more glory and devastating abilities.
- New single player mechanic allows you to equip incredibly powerful equipment that corrupts your squad and will guide the story towards or away from the corrupting influence of Chaos.
- Swear loyalty to the Chaos Gods and play as the bloodthirsty Chaos Space Marines in multiplayer battles against both Chaos Rising and Dawn of War II owners.
What’s in Dawn of War IV?
A new story on Kronus
Dawn of War IV returns to Kronus and is announced with four distinct faction campaigns that feed into one narrative. Games Workshop’s August 19, 2025 announcement describes more than 70 missions playable solo or with a friend. That is an announced mission count, not a promise of a particular campaign length.
Four announced launch factions
- Space Marines
- Orks
- Necrons
- Adeptus Mechanicus
The factions provide a different lineup from the nine armies represented across Definitive Edition’s collected games. The announced modes also include Skirmish, Last Stand, and multiplayer. PLAION’s support FAQ estimates the campaign at 20+ hours, while noting that total playtime varies by player; this is an estimate, not measured or guaranteed duration. Deep Silver’s product page describes the game as built using a modern engine, but performance and the finished experience cannot be judged before release.
Rank #2
- Customize your hero’s weapons, items and abilities as they grow in power
- Personalize your army’s insignias, colors, banners and names
- Earn and unlock achievements and medals as you prove your superiority online in 29 NEW multi-player maps
- Includes all previous Dawn of War maps for a stunning 114 maps in total
- Groundbreaking Hybrid Expansion design allows Soulstorm to be played alone, or combine it with Dawn of War, Winter Assault, and Dark Crusade to create the largest RTS ever
When does Dawn of War IV come out?
As of October 7, 2026, Deep Silver lists Dawn of War IV for December 3, 2026 on Steam for Windows PC. The publisher says the Commander Edition includes a three-day early unlock beginning November 30. Its listed contents are the base game, Blood Ravens Story Prologue, AFTERMATH campaign expansion plus a new faction, and digital soundtrack; the Standard Edition includes the base game. See the current Deep Silver product page for the publisher’s edition and release details.
There is a conflicting older date on the PLAION support FAQ, which still lists September 17, 2026, calls the early-access edition “Ultimate Edition,” and gives September 14 for early access. Those details do not match the current product page, so the December 3 date and Commander Edition naming are the current publisher listing.

Should you buy Definitive Edition or wait for Dawn of War IV?
Choose Definitive Edition for the classic games now
Choose Dawn of War: Definitive Edition if you want to play the original campaigns and their associated classic content now. Its appeal is the combined collection, with the original games’ factions, skirmish, multiplayer, and maps updated for modern PCs.
Wait for Dawn of War IV for a new entry
Wait for Dawn of War IV if you want a new story on Kronus, its four announced factions, and its new campaign and modes. It is a separate sequel, and its release is still in the future as of October 7, 2026; its final performance and play experience have not been independently evaluated here.
Rank #4
- Real-time strategy game based on the popular table-top war game
- Vie for the survival of mankind or its ultimate destruction
- Control 1 of 4 unique races
- Improved resource model makes it easier to focus on frontline action
- Single player campaigns; Multiplayer for up to 8 via LAN or Internet
Neither choice is objectively better on the available information: they answer different needs. Definitive Edition offers an established classic collection, while Dawn of War IV is the upcoming new game.
