Ian Dunn’s “Dawg Gone LED Tester” is a 2025 Hackaday Component Abuse Challenge entry that uses a hot dog in an unconventional LED demonstration. Hackaday describes forks wired to mains electricity at either end of the sausage, with LEDs inserted by their pins; it says the sausage acts as a crude potential divider and allows the LEDs to glow. This is a hazardous stunt, not a safe way to test LEDs.
What is the Dawg Gone LED Tester?
It is Ian Dunn’s entry in Hackaday’s 2025 Component Abuse Challenge, which treats the hot dog as an abused electronics “component.” Hackaday’s November 9, 2025 article describes an ordinary table fork wired to mains electricity inserted into each end of a sausage, with LED pins pushed into the food.
How does a hot dog light an LED?
Hackaday says the sausage forms a crude potential divider, creating enough voltage across the gap between an LED’s pins for it to glow. The article provides neither electrical measurements nor a circuit diagram, so that explanation is the publisher’s account of the demonstration, not a verified circuit analysis.

No. The described setup involves mains electricity and should not be copied as an LED-testing method. OSHA’s equipment-use guidance says test equipment and accessories should be rated for the circuits and environments where they are used. Its electrical incidents guidance also warns that equipment used outside its intended design can lose built-in safety protections and says only qualified persons may perform testing work on electric circuits or equipment.

Does the demonstration contaminate the food?
Hackaday raises the possibility that heavy metals could leach from LED pins into the meat, but reports no test or finding that this happened. The article therefore does not establish that the sausage was contaminated or that it was safe to eat.

Use a purpose-built LED tester rather than a mains-connected stunt. When evaluating a tester, check its rated test conditions, which LED types it supports, whether it indicates polarity, and whether it limits test current. Hackaday’s article does not name or review a specific tester.
