If an AAC track is silent in DaVinci Resolve on Linux, converting or extracting its audio to PCM WAV is the most conservative workaround. Blackmagic Design’s Resolve 20 codec table for Rocky Linux 8.6 (CUDA) lists AAC/M4A as unsupported and uncompressed PCM WAV as supported. That establishes the limitation for the documented Resolve 20 configuration; it does not confirm the exact codec behavior of every Resolve 21.1 build.

Why AAC audio may be silent in Resolve on Linux

The symptom is often a codec-support problem rather than a problem with your speakers or audio interface. Blackmagic Design’s Resolve 20 supported codec table lists AAC/M4A as unsupported for Linux, with Rocky Linux 8.6 (CUDA) identified as the Linux platform in the table. It lists independent uncompressed PCM WAV as supported for decoding and encoding.

This evidence is specific to Resolve 20 and the Linux configuration named in the document. Blackmagic’s support center lists Resolve 21.1 for Linux dated September 8, 2026, but its release summary does not announce an AAC-support change. The available official information therefore does not establish that AAC playback is fixed in Resolve 21.1.

Convert the audio to PCM WAV

For a straightforward, low-risk workflow, make a PCM WAV copy of the audio and use that file in your project. This avoids changing Resolve’s installation or modifying its binaries.

  1. Confirm the source codec. Check the media’s audio properties in your file inspector or media-management software. Verify that the silent track is AAC; a file extension alone does not identify the audio codec.
  2. Create a PCM WAV version. Use an audio or video conversion tool to export the audio as uncompressed PCM WAV. Preserve the source sample rate and channel layout where practical, and keep the original media untouched.
  3. Bring the WAV into Resolve. Import it into the Media Pool, then place it on the timeline in place of the silent source audio, or relink/replace the audio according to your project workflow.
  4. Check sync and channels. Compare the new audio against the picture from the beginning and at later points. Confirm that stereo or multichannel audio has the expected channel layout and that no channels were dropped or remapped.

The supported-format table supports PCM WAV as the workaround format; it does not prescribe a particular conversion application or guarantee a result for every media file.

Should you use the unofficial AAC patch?

The third-party resolve-aacfix project documents a binary patch for Resolve Studio 21 on Linux x86-64. It is an alternative for users who specifically need AAC decoding in the original media, but it is not a Blackmagic-supported fix. The project warns that its patch modifies a large proprietary binary, so it carries more installation and recovery risk than creating a WAV intermediate.

According to the project README, the patch was tested on Resolve Studio 21.0.0, 21.0.3, and 21.0.4, with full end-to-end testing on 21.0.4. It claims support for LC-AAC and HE-AAC when the audio is inside video-containing MP4, MOV, M4A, or MKV files. The project excludes raw AAC/ADTS, TS, FLV, LATM, and MXF. It says the free version has not been tested and that later 21.x releases have not been validated beyond 21.0.4. Check the README against your exact build and media type before considering it.

Convert or extract to PCM WAV Blackmagic’s Resolve 20 Linux codec table lists PCM WAV as supported; this is not a confirmation for every Resolve 21 build. Creates a separate WAV intermediate; use it instead of the AAC audio. Conservative format workaround, but it does not preserve the original AAC as the audio Resolve reads.
resolve-aacfix patch Third-party README reports testing on Resolve Studio 21.0.0, 21.0.3, and 21.0.4; full end-to-end testing on 21.0.4. Free Resolve untested. What to check if the WAV is also silent

  • Verify that the exported file is PCM WAV rather than AAC audio placed inside a WAV container.
  • Confirm that the WAV contains audible signal in a separate player before importing it.
  • Check that the correct audio file and timeline track are enabled and that the track is not muted.
  • Recheck channel layout if the source is multichannel or the converted file sounds incomplete.

These checks help separate a codec issue from a conversion, media-selection, or timeline problem. Blackmagic’s support center lists Resolve 21.1 for Linux and points users to community forums for free Resolve 21 technical support: Blackmagic Design support.
