The Washington Post reported that David Flippo received a Bronze Star for service, not a Bronze Star with valor, while campaign materials described the award as being “for valor” in 2023 and again in 2026. Flippo blamed a video-editing mistake; his spokesperson attributed a later fundraising message to a copywriter reusing old talking points. Separate reporting on a campaign cap bearing a Bronze Star pin and two V-shaped devices raises another question, but the available photographs do not establish who selected the pins or what Flippo intended voters to infer.
What did David Flippo say about his Bronze Star?
The Washington Post reported on September 24, 2026, that Flippo received a Bronze Star in 2004 for service, but not the Bronze Star with valor. The Post said a 2023 campaign announcement video described the Bronze Star as received “for valor,” and that the claim appeared in at least two fundraising solicitations in 2026. After the Post contacted the campaign, the old video was deleted from social media. The Washington Post’s account describes the campaign wording and the subsequent response.
Flippo said video editors had combined two different decorations. In the Post’s report, he said: “Three years ago, our video editors made a mistake and tried to combine these two awards for a commercial.” He apologized for not paying closer attention and described the exaggeration as an honest mistake. His spokesperson separately said a copywriter accidentally reused old talking points in a recent fundraising message. These are the campaign’s explanations; the reporting does not independently establish how either wording error occurred.

The Bronze Star can recognize meritorious service or valor; those are distinct bases for the award. The Post quoted the Air Force Personnel Center’s definition of the valor device: it denotes “an act or acts of heroism by an individual above what is normally expected while engaged in direct combat with an enemy of the United States, or an opposing foreign or armed force, with exposure to enemy hostilities and personal risk.” The device therefore signals a specific combat-heroism distinction, not a generic enhancement to any Bronze Star. The Post’s report explains the distinction and cites the personnel center’s definition.

Military awards expert Doug Sterner, whom the Post identified as a recipient of two Bronze Stars, called the repeated description “a lie” and said it showed “a pattern of deception.” Those are Sterner’s judgments about the campaign’s repeated wording, not an official finding about Flippo’s intent.
What do the V-shaped devices on Flippo’s hat show?
Nevada News & Views reported that campaign images showed Flippo wearing a cap with a Bronze Star pin and two V-shaped devices; it also said he later appeared publicly in a plain green cap. The outlet quoted retired Air Force Master Sergeant Daniel J. Casentini interpreting the V devices as valor symbols and questioning their placement beside the Bronze Star. Casentini suggested the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor could account for one V device, while the official uniform photograph discussed in the article showed no V device on the Bronze Star ribbon. Nevada News & Views’ account presents these observations and Casentini’s interpretation.

Casentini called the hat display a “dishonest attempt to deceive uninformed voters,” explicitly framing that as his opinion. The cap images may reasonably prompt questions about the symbols, but a photograph of pins cannot by itself establish who chose or attached them, whether they were intended to represent a particular decoration, or what Flippo meant viewers to conclude.

Mother Jones published a hat-focused follow-up on October 2, 2026, reporting veterans’ interpretations of the V symbols and noting the possibility that a second V related to the unit award. It also reported that the campaign did not respond to its questions about the symbols. Mother Jones’ report adds those interpretations; it does not resolve who selected the devices or establish intent.
