Noise and lighting concerns have surfaced in several data-centre planning disputes, but the available reports do not establish that the unidentified project behind this headline has harmed wildlife. They describe separate proposals, objections and developer claims—not a single confirmed case. The distinction matters: a concern raised in a submission is not the same as an independent assessment finding or measured impact.
What the reports establish—and what they do not
The headline does not name a country, facility or planning application, and the reported examples below concern different projects. They show that noise, lighting and possible effects on wildlife are live planning questions. They do not identify the project behind the headline or prove that any proposed data centre has caused ecological harm.
- Concerns: Residents, community members or nearby institutions may describe risks they believe a proposal could pose.
- Objections: A regulator or public authority may formally object to a proposal. That is significant, but it is not automatically a final finding that harm has occurred.
- Predictions and mitigation claims: Acoustic modeling and a developer’s description of planned controls are not measurements of actual operating noise or independent confirmation that controls work.
- Measured impacts and ecological findings: These require project-specific evidence; the cited reports do not provide such findings for the unidentified project.
Three separate planning disputes
Nashville, Tennessee: concerns near the zoo
CBS News reported on 11 June 2026 that residents objected to a proposed data centre near Nashville Zoo, citing noise, fumes and bright lights. The report described a facility of nearly 70,000 square feet that would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week; it also said the zoo houses more than 3,000 animal species. Those figures describe the Nashville proposal and zoo, not the unidentified project in the headline. CBS News report

DC BLOX chief revenue officer Chris Gatch told CBS, “There is a tremendous amount of misinformation,” and the report describes the developer’s response that generators would be placed on the opposite side of the building and fitted with sound-attenuation enclosures. Those are the developer’s mitigation claims; the report does not establish that the measures were independently tested or shown to be effective.
Campbellfield, Victoria: reported EPA objection
Hume City Council reported on 26 August 2026 that Victoria’s EPA had formally objected to a proposed data centre over potential noise impacts and cumulative effects. The council called for stronger planning review. The council described the separate proposal as a $1.1 billion project covering 22 hectares, with capacity of up to 336 megawatts; these are project details, not evidence of wildlife harm and not figures for Nashville. Mayor Cr Carly Moore said: “The EPA’s objection validates the serious concerns Council and our community have raised about the potential impact a development of this scale could have on local families and residents.” Hume City Council statement

- Project identity and status: The facility’s name and location, the decision-maker, the application documents, and whether the proposal is pending, approved, amended or operating.
- Construction and operation separately: Construction noise is temporary and activity-dependent; operational noise may continue during routine operation. The assessment should make clear which phase and equipment each prediction covers.
- Predicted versus measured sound: Identify whether a figure comes from a model or monitoring, who produced it, where and when it was assessed, and what operating assumptions apply. The cited reports do not establish a project-specific sound level or universal threshold.
- Day, night and sound character: Look for evaluation of day and night conditions, background noise, cumulative contributions from other sources, and any low-frequency or tonal characteristics considered by the acoustic assessment.
- People, habitats and sensitive receptors: Check distances and exposure for nearby homes and ecological receptors, and whether the documents identify relevant species and habitat rather than relying on general claims about wildlife.
- Lighting: Review the proposed lighting design and light spill, including what reaches nearby habitat and whether controls are specified.
- Mitigation and accountability: Look for enforceable conditions, independent verification, operational monitoring and a complaint process—not only statements of intended equipment placement or enclosure.
- Authority findings: Distinguish public comments, a formal regulator objection, the proponent’s response, an independent assessment and the decision-maker’s final conditions.
Why the distinction matters
Data centres can raise planning questions about continuous equipment noise and light near sensitive places, but the existence of a concern does not by itself show that animals have been affected. Equally, a developer’s stated mitigation plan is not proof that predicted impacts are acceptable or that controls perform as intended. The answer for any particular site depends on its application, independent acoustic and ecological evidence, regulatory findings and, where available, operational monitoring. The sources above do not provide enough technical data to rank the three locations or infer a universal noise limit.
