Two different developments show how quickly AI infrastructure is expanding. Gartner projects worldwide data-center systems spending will reach $822 billion in 2026, while Denmark has put its national Gefion AI supercomputer into operation for research, startups and enterprise work. The first figure is an analyst forecast; the second is a specific facility launched in Copenhagen in October 2024.
Gartner’s 2026 data-center forecast
Gartner’s July 27, 2026 forecast estimates worldwide data-center systems spending at $822 billion in 2026, a 62.5% increase from its estimated $506 billion in 2025. These are Gartner projections, not audited final spending results.
| Category | 2025 estimate | 2026 forecast | 2026 growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data-center systems | $506 billion | $822 billion | 62.5% |
| Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) | $222 billion | $287 billion | 29.3% |
| Worldwide IT spending | $5.577 trillion | $6.369 trillion | 14.2% |

Why Gartner expects acceleration
Gartner attributes the strongest demand to AI workloads, cloud platforms and intelligent applications. Distinguished VP Analyst John-David Lovelock said: “Data center systems and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) are the top growth segments, reflecting accelerating investment in AI infrastructure, cloud platforms, and intelligent applications.”
Gartner’s broader September 16, 2026 outlook projects $2.7 trillion in worldwide AI spending in 2026, up 49.5% year over year. That is a broad AI-spending measure, not a subtotal of the July data-center systems figure, so the two numbers should not be added together.

Gartner also cautions that growth will be uneven. Lovelock wrote: “Despite the strong growth in spending, this is not a rising tide lifts all boats market trend”. Inflation, constrained supply, higher hardware and memory costs, AI funding programs and changing technology priorities can shift which vendors and segments benefit.

What Gefion is and when Denmark launched it
Gefion is Denmark’s first AI supercomputer. It was launched in Copenhagen on October 23, 2024, at an event attended by Denmark’s king, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Danish Centre for AI Innovation (DCAI) CEO Nadia Carlsten.

In an October 1, 2024 announcement, DCAI said the machine was fully operational, powered entirely by renewable energy and intended to serve researchers, startups and enterprises. The energy and operational-status statements are DCAI’s claims; the announcement does not constitute an independent verification of its electricity sourcing.

How the two announcements differ
| Question | Gartner forecast | Gefion |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Worldwide market spending | One Danish national facility |
| Time and status | Projected spending for 2026, published July 27, 2026 | Launched October 23, 2024; DCAI reported it operational October 1, 2024 |
| Purpose | Estimate of money spent across data-center systems and related markets | Compute infrastructure for research, startup and enterprise workloads |
| Evidence type | Analyst estimate | Operator and supplier announcements |
Gefion is therefore an example of the infrastructure investment Gartner expects, not evidence that Gartner’s worldwide projection has already been achieved. The available announcements also do not support ranking Gefion’s performance against every other supercomputer.

Documented use of Gefion
On June 11, 2025, NVIDIA reported that Novo Nordisk had an agreement with DCAI to use Gefion for drug-discovery and other AI workloads. This is a dated example of a collaboration, not a complete customer list or a guarantee that access conditions remain unchanged.

For researchers and companies
Gefion should be treated as institutional compute accessed through DCAI, subject to the operator’s current eligibility, scheduling and commercial terms. DCAI’s announcement identifies researchers, startups and enterprises as intended users, but it does not publish a universal self-service price or continuing access guarantee.
For infrastructure buyers
Gartner’s forecast points to a rapidly expanding market for servers, accelerators, cloud capacity, networking, power and cooling. It does not mean every product category will grow at 62.5%, nor does it identify a single winning supplier. Procurement decisions still require workload sizing, power availability, supply timing and total-cost analysis.
For consumers
Gefion is not a consumer PC, a retail graphics card or a supercomputer that individuals can purchase. Buying a generic GPU or networking device would not provide access to this Danish system. No central retail product or verified affiliate offer is established by these announcements.
Bottom line on the roundup
Gartner’s July 2026 numbers describe a projected worldwide spending surge led by AI infrastructure and cloud demand, with substantial uncertainty about who captures the growth. Gefion supplies a concrete national-scale example: Denmark’s operational H100-based system is designed to turn that infrastructure investment into research and enterprise compute. Keep the forecast and the facility separate—one is a market estimate, the other is a specific service platform.
