To use Dashlane autofill in Safari on a Mac, install Dashlane from the Mac App Store, enable its Safari extension, grant website access, and turn off Safari’s built-in AutoFill. The Mac app and Safari extension are separate parts of the experience: installing the app also installs the extension, but Safari autofill will not work until you enable and sign in to the extension.
What you need before installing Dashlane on a Mac
- macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later. Dashlane lists this as the minimum for its macOS app and Safari extension. See its macOS installation requirements.
- Safari. The browser extension is required for Dashlane autofill in Safari, even when the desktop app is installed.
- Your Dashlane account and a recovery option. Dashlane recommends setting up at least one account recovery option. Recovery options are an onboarding safeguard, not a guarantee that forgotten credentials can always be recovered.
Get Dashlane through the Mac App Store or another official source Dashlane identifies. Avoid unofficial downloads.
Mac app vs. Safari extension: which does what?

Dashlane distributes the Mac app and Safari extension together through the Mac App Store; installing the app also installs the extension. However, the extension is not enabled by default for a new Safari user. The desktop app works independently, so you can open your vault there without using the browser extension.
Install Dashlane and enable it in Safari
- Install the app. Open the Mac App Store, find Dashlane, and install it. Launch the app and sign in.
- Open Safari’s extension settings. In Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Extensions. Select or enable Dashlane.
- Allow website access. When Safari asks for permission, allow the extension to access websites. Without this permission, it cannot work with pages you visit.
- Sign in to the extension. Select the Dashlane icon in Safari and sign in. If prompted, verify the extension as a separate device. Dashlane says verification can use a code sent to your email or a token from an authenticator app; this verification is separate from signing in to the Mac app.
- Turn off Safari’s competing AutoFill options. In Safari, go to Safari > Settings > AutoFill and turn off the built-in AutoFill checkboxes. Dashlane recommends this to avoid conflicts with its autofill.
These steps follow Dashlane’s Safari setup instructions. Safari’s labels or prompts can vary by macOS version.

Use Dashlane autofill in Safari
After setup, visit a site where you have saved login details and use Dashlane’s extension or its autofill prompt to fill the relevant fields. Dashlane says its autofill engine analyzes page content to identify field types and offer relevant stored information. That is the company’s description of its product, not an independent performance assessment. Its autofill guide explains the feature.
If Dashlane autofill does not appear
- Check the extension is enabled. Return to Safari > Settings > Extensions and confirm Dashlane is on.
- Review website permission. Confirm Safari has allowed Dashlane to access the site you are using.
- Check Safari AutoFill settings. Dashlane advises turning off Safari’s built-in AutoFill checkboxes in Safari > Settings > AutoFill to prevent competing autofill behavior.
- Sign in to the extension itself. The desktop app’s signed-in state does not replace signing in to the Safari extension.
- Complete device verification if requested. The extension may need to be verified separately from the Mac app.
If these settings are correct and a particular page still does not fill, the available information does not establish that every site’s fields will be recognized. You can use the extension’s vault view to access saved information while you investigate.

- 2FA settings cannot be changed or viewed in the macOS app.
- AI-Powered Scam Protection and AI phishing alerts are unavailable in Safari.
- Self-hosted SSO is unavailable in the Safari extension because of Apple limitations. Dashlane says self-hosted SSO can be used through the macOS app; this distinction is mainly relevant to organizational users.

Security and account setup
Dashlane describes its service as using a zero-knowledge architecture: vault data is encrypted locally and decrypted on authorized devices. Its architecture article describes AES-256-CBC with HMAC-SHA256 for vault encryption and a device-specific authentication key. These are Dashlane’s descriptions of its design, not independent verification or a guarantee that an account or device cannot be compromised. A compromised Mac, weak account secrets, or unsafe recovery practices can still create risk. Read the company’s security overview and architecture overview for its explanations.
During setup, use an account recovery option, carefully complete any device verification, and install only from official sources. Dashlane’s materials also describe security-key and passwordless login choices, but they do not establish that a particular hardware key is necessary for this Mac setup.
