If you use an iPhone or iPad, install the newest update Apple offers for your device now. Apple’s iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 releases include protections against DarkSword web attacks, and the sources behind this article identify Apple’s software updates as the protection against it.
DarkSword surfaced in March 2026, when Lookout and iVerify each published reports on it. Both described observed campaigns against iPhones running iOS 18.4 through 18.6.2. Those are the versions researchers saw at the time, not a permanent boundary, so the reliable check is whether your device is on the latest release Settings offers.
How to update your iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update.
- If an update is listed, tap the install button shown (Update Now or Install Now, depending on the release) and let the device finish. Keep it on power while it installs.
- To stay current, go to Settings, General, Software Update, Automatic Updates, and make sure Install iOS Updates is switched on. Apple said it expanded iOS 18.7.7 to more devices on April 1, 2026 so that Automatic Updates could deliver the DarkSword web-attack protections.
- To confirm the installed version, go to Settings, General, About.
Which release to target
- iOS 18 devices: Lookout advised iOS 18.7.3 or later. Apple’s iOS 18.7.7 is the release it tied to DarkSword protections, so install that or any newer release offered for your model.
- iOS 26 devices: Lookout advised iOS 26.3 or later. iVerify said the patching it tracked for the vulnerabilities it reported ended in stages with iOS 26.3.
- iPad: the Apple release tied to DarkSword protections is iPadOS 18.7.7, offered on the same Settings path.
Update eligibility depends on the model and its supported software branch, so the update screen on your device is the authority for what is newest. If your model no longer receives iOS updates, Lookout’s advice was to retire it rather than keep using it for sensitive activity.

Apple’s advisory is intentionally terse about security issues. It states: “For our customers’ protection, Apple doesn’t disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available.” The same advisory says the fixes associated with DarkSword first shipped in 2025.

What DarkSword is
DarkSword is an exploit chain, meaning a sequence of software flaws used together to gain control of a device, bundled with an infostealer that copies data off it. It is not a standalone consumer app you can find or remove like one. Reports describe web-based delivery and exploitation.
Lookout described it as a full iOS exploit chain and infostealer. Its March 18, 2026 report described a “hit-and-run” method: data is pulled out quickly, and the malware then erases its presence to avoid detection. Justin Albrecht, Lookout’s global director of mobile threat intelligence, said: “Advanced mobile malware has ceased to be a tool wielded solely by governments for espionage and is now in the hands of groups seeking financial gain.”

iVerify’s March 18, 2026 report described a JavaScript watering-hole attack, in which visitors to a compromised website are redirected to malicious code. It identified six vulnerabilities across two exploit chains.

The 18.4 to 18.6.2 range describes the devices in the reported campaigns. It should not be read as the full set of versions any DarkSword variant can reach, and the reports do not establish that boundary.

What the malware may take
The two research teams listed different data categories in what they observed. Each list describes one sample or one set of observations, so not every deployment collects every category.
Lookout’s list
- SMS and iMessage

Who was targeted and who is behind it
iVerify said its observed watering-hole attack targeted iPhones in Ukraine. Visitors were redirected from a compromised Ukrainian government website. iVerify said it worked with CERT-UA, Ukraine’s national computer emergency response team, before disclosure. Rocky Cole, iVerify co-founder and COO, said: “The second mass attack disclosed in two weeks proves what many of us have been saying, that mobile attacks are widespread and no longer something businesses and governments can ignore.”

Lookout connected the infrastructure it observed to UNC6353, a group previously reported by Google, and described the associated actor as likely Russian-linked. These are researchers’ assessments based on observed infrastructure. They are not a definitive public legal finding about every DarkSword user.

iVerify’s March 18, 2026 release said iOS versions 18.4 through 18.6.2 were still running on up to 270 million devices — iVerify, 2026. That figure is the vendor’s estimate of devices on those versions at that time. It is not a count of infected devices, and it is not a count of devices that are unpatched today.

What does not protect you
Changing a password, installing an accessory or buying generic security software does not patch an iOS exploit. The sources identify Apple’s software updates as the protection, and a password change will not close the flaw an exploit uses.
If you believe a device has been compromised, check Apple’s current support guidance or contact qualified incident-response help. The sources behind this article do not establish a forensic recovery procedure, so do not assume a reinstall or a single setting will remove everything an infostealer collected.
Mobile security for organizations
Individual readers need only the update steps above. Organizations evaluating mobile security should compare:
- Device coverage across the iOS branches they actually run
- Detection and response capabilities, including how quickly a suspected compromise is flagged
- Integration with device management, so that rapid patching can be enforced across the fleet
- Operational support for patch deployment and exception handling
Lookout describes enterprise mobile threat detection and response offerings, and it names organizational monitoring, device management and rapid patching as relevant practices. The reports do not include an independent comparison or test results for any product, so treat any vendor as one option to evaluate rather than a requirement.
