Install the latest iOS update available for your iPhone. Apple says updated versions of iOS 15 through iOS 26 are protected from the reported web attacks linked to DarkSword. The headline’s “220 million” figure is not confirmed by the primary disclosures as a count of iPhones attacked or hacked.
Am I safe if I update my iPhone?
Apple says iPhones running updated versions of iOS 15 through iOS 26 are protected from the reported web attacks. Its guidance is to install the latest version available for your particular device. If your iPhone is on iOS 13 or iOS 14, Apple says you need to update to iOS 15 to get these protections; availability depends on the model.
Apple’s April 2, 2026 guidance says that users who have kept their iPhone software up to date are already protected. Updating addresses the reported attack route; it does not establish whether a particular phone was previously compromised.
How do I check whether my iPhone has the latest iOS update?
- Open Settings → General → Software Update.
- Wait for the iPhone to check for an update. If one is offered, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
- After installation, return to Settings → General → Software Update to check whether another update is available.
Install the newest release offered for your model. iPhones can have different update availability, so the version shown on another device—or in a general news report—may not be the version available to yours.

Does 220 million mean 220 million iPhones were hacked?
No. The primary disclosures cited here do not substantiate 220 million as the number of iPhones attacked or infected. iVerify estimated on March 18, 2026, that up to 270 million devices were still running iOS 18.4 through 18.6.2. That was an estimate of devices using versions in the reported target range, not a tally of confirmed victims. It also does not establish how many devices remain exposed now.
Lookout’s March 18, 2026 disclosure identified iOS 18.4 through 18.6.2 as targeted versions. Those findings describe the versions and activity reported at that time; Apple’s later guidance on April 2, 2026, is the more useful source for current protective action.

How did the reported DarkSword attacks work?
Apple describes malicious links or compromised websites as a risk to older iOS versions. Lookout and iVerify describe DarkSword as a multistage exploit chain that could move from browser-related components to broader access on a device. iVerify characterized the activity it observed in Ukraine as a watering-hole attack, in which people may encounter malicious content on a website they visit.
Recommended Free Tools
Lookout reported that the chain could rapidly collect sensitive information, including credentials and cryptocurrency wallets, before attempting to erase evidence of its presence. iVerify listed additional potential collection targets, including messages, call history, location and browser history, Wi-Fi passwords, health data, notes, and calendar data. These are reported capabilities—not proof that every targeted iPhone, or any particular reader’s phone, had data stolen.

Can DarkSword steal my messages or photos?
iVerify’s reported collection targets include messages and several kinds of personal data, but the cited findings do not establish that a specific person’s information was taken. The disclosures cited here do not specifically establish photo theft as a DarkSword capability, so it would be misleading to claim that photos were confirmed stolen. A remote article cannot determine whether an individual device was infected.
Should I turn on Lockdown Mode?
Apple describes Lockdown Mode as supplementary protection against these specific attacks, including for people who cannot update immediately. Apple still recommends updating as soon as possible. It is also a reasonable extra layer for someone with a concrete reason to believe they may be targeted, but it is not a substitute for installing available updates.

Use App Store apps, choose unique passwords or passkeys, and be cautious with links and attachments from unknown senders.
