Danganronpa 2×2 pairs an updated version of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair with Slayhem Mode, a new story route that changes the chain of events while keeping the original setting and cast. At Tokyo Game Show 2026, RPGFan’s Matt Wardell played an early Original Mode Class Trial and a brief Slayhem Mode scene—not the full game. The preview showed how the two modes differ, but left the new route’s mysteries unresolved.
What is new in Danganronpa 2×2?
The main change is the addition of two distinct modes. Original Mode updates the story of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair with revised presentation. Slayhem Mode starts a different chain of events in the same setting with the same cast, leading to different victims, culprits and tricks. Spike Chunsoft says Slayhem’s scenario is equal to or greater in volume than the original scenario; that is a publisher claim, not something established by the short TGS demo.

| Mode | Story and outcomes | What the TGS preview showed |
|---|---|---|
| Original Mode | An updated presentation of the original story; the script is reported unchanged except for typo fixes. | An early Class Trial in which the player challenges contradictions using evidence phrases. |
| Slayhem Mode | A new chain of events in the original setting, with the same cast but different victims, culprits and tricks. | A scene involving Monokuma distributing secret items to students; Wardell also reported a new character, Sakutaro Higashi, and an Akimbo Consensus mechanic. |
The table describes the modes and the limited demo observations, not a full account of Slayhem’s plot. AUTOMATON WEST separately reported playing part of Slayhem and also noted secret items. Its TGS article flags minor spoilers for the previous game, so keep that in mind if seeking more detail.

Original Mode: evidence in a heated Class Trial
Wardell played a remake of an early Class Trial, following a body discovery and investigation sequence into the courtroom debate. He describes aiming a crosshair and shooting phrases representing gathered evidence at points of contention in the dialogue. He found the trial heated and frantic, and says his relative unfamiliarity with the cast made names difficult to keep straight. That is his personal experience, not a claim that the game is unusually hard for every player.
#1 Best Overall
- This latest installment features an all-new storyline built on the foundation of "Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair". The original setting and cast of characters are back, but a single incident leads to an entirely new set of victims, culprits, and tricks.
- The new scenario offers the same volume of content as the original, delivering a complete and immersive experience.
- Also included is the original "Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair" scenario, adapted to modern platforms with updated visuals and refined presentation.
Wardell reports overhauled visuals, rerecorded music and apparent fixes to dialogue typos. In his account of an interview with director Takahiro Suzuki, the original script remained unchanged apart from typo fixes. Suzuki’s reported explanation was that Original Mode lets fans revisit the setting while the game also offers a fully new story.
Slayhem Mode: a changed chain of events
In the Slayhem sample, Wardell saw Monokuma distribute different secret items to students, setting a new chain of events in motion. He also reports newly composed music, the appearance of Sakutaro Higashi and an Akimbo Consensus mechanic. These are details from one scene, not confirmation of how the full route develops or resolves.

- Languages: Enjoy English in-game text and Japanese and English in-game voices.
A separate TGS hands-on by AUTOMATON WEST describes redrawn sprites with animated expressions and smoother effects, alongside Slayhem’s secret items. Together, the two accounts support the impression that the presentation has been refreshed, but they cover only portions of the game.

- It demonstrates the contrast in premise: one mode updates the original story, while the other changes what happens to the cast.
- It offers a sample of familiar trial play: Wardell describes confronting dialogue contradictions by using evidence gathered in the investigation.
- It does not establish the full Slayhem plot: the playable sample was one scene, so specific claims about later victims, culprits or twists would go beyond what was shown.
- It is a preview, not a review: the TGS sessions covered selected portions, not the complete game.
Release date, platforms and editions
Spike Chunsoft’s English product page lists Danganronpa 2×2 for January 14, 2027, on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store. These are the page’s current listings and may change. The page lists one player, Japanese and English text and voice, and age ratings of ESRB Mature, PEGI 16 and USK 16.

The same page lists a $59.99 Standard Edition and a $139.99 Psycho Tropical Vacation Package. Those are the English page’s US-dollar prices, not universal regional pricing. The publisher lists standard physical editions for Switch 2, Switch and PS5. RPGFan reports Xbox as digital-only; the publisher’s preorder notice does not list a physical Xbox edition.
The limited package includes a choice of game format, a reversible RSVLTS hat, 3-inch Kidrobot Monokuma and Monomi figures, the soundtrack and an outer box. Its Steam format uses a printed card with a Steam key. Spike Chunsoft also announced a flight-tag/keychain preorder bonus through its official store. Check the official store for current stock and bonus terms before treating either the package or bonus as available.

How the Japanese TGS listing differs
Spike Chunsoft’s Japanese TGS 2026 notice lists ordinary editions at ¥6,800 before tax (¥7,480 tax included) and a digital deluxe edition at ¥10,780 tax included. These are Japan-market figures and should not be compared with the English page’s dollar prices as if they were the same regional offer. The Japanese notice identifies Gemdrops as the developer.
The TGS activation included a playable station, photo spot, trial-themed fans, stickers, a three-piece truth-bullet keychain, a stage talk and an acrylic charm for players. Those were event activities and giveaways, not evidence that the items are generally available.

Why the two-mode approach matters
Original Mode gives returning players an updated way to revisit Goodbye Despair, while Slayhem Mode’s altered chain of events creates a separate reason to return to the same setting and cast. The distinction is more than a presentation refresh: the publisher describes different victims, culprits and tricks in the new route. Whether those changes deliver a satisfying mystery will depend on the full story, which the TGS sample did not reveal.
Spike Chunsoft says the Danganronpa series has surpassed 10 million cumulative shipments worldwide, a franchise total announced in February 2026—not sales of Danganronpa 2×2.
