An RBI rate hike in the coming months is a “meaningful possibility” if oil-driven inflation risks persist, says Gautam Sinha Roy, Chief – Equity Funds at ICICI Prudential Life Insurance. Roy describes any near-term cycle as shallow for now and says an easing of the conflict would reduce the case for hikes. This is Roy’s conditional market outlook—not an announced RBI decision. The October 5, 2026, Moneycontrol interview does not establish whether the RBI will act at an October or December meeting.
Why Roy sees a conditional case for an RBI hike
Roy says the external environment for India has become less supportive. August and September CPI prints were manageable, in his assessment, but he sees higher forward risks if oil-related inflation persists. He also points to RBI liquidity absorption as a sign that policy may be shifting toward pre-emptive tightening.
His conclusion depends on how those pressures develop. If oil inflation continues, he considers a hike in coming months a meaningful possibility; if the conflict situation eases, he says the need for hikes would recede. He characterizes the possible cycle this way: “Hence, a rate hike in the coming months is a meaningful possibility, especially if the oil inflation scenario sustains.” He adds, “However, we believe that this looks like a shallow hike cycle as of now.” Both statements are Roy’s views, not RBI guidance.

MOSPI describes CPI as a measure of changes in household retail prices and notes its use in inflation targeting and price-stability policy. That catalogue entry does not establish a September 2026 CPI reading or provide a numerical inflation rate for that month.

What could change the market outlook
Oil, conflict and domestic financial conditions
Roy’s scenario turns on whether oil-driven inflation risk persists, how the conflict develops, and whether RBI liquidity absorption and domestic financial conditions continue to tighten. These are factors in his outlook, not a formula that determines the RBI’s next decision. A change in the conflict trajectory could alter the inflation risk he describes.
Global yields and borrowing conditions
Roy links higher yields to inflation, oil, fiscal deficits, bond issuance and term premiums. In his view, Indian government-security yields above 7% were already tightening financial conditions through domestic bonds, the rupee and the cost of capital. The figures below are approximate 10-year yields reported by Roy in the October 5, 2026, Moneycontrol interview; they are interview figures, not live market quotes.

Roy urges caution rather than alarm: higher yields can weigh on equity valuations, but stronger nominal growth can also support earnings. He also flags a possible vulnerability for leveraged AI companies if financing costs rise while returns on large capital expenditures remain uncertain.

What Roy says about the Federal Reserve
The official US policy decision is separate from Roy’s interpretation of what may come next. On September 16, 2026, the Federal Open Market Committee raised the federal funds target range by 0.25 percentage point to 3.75–4.00%. The Fed’s accompanying projections record individual participants’ assessments of appropriate policy under their own assumptions; they are not a binding promise of future rate increases.
Rank #3
Roy reads those September projections as showing that 16 of 18 participants expected at least one additional 25-basis-point hike after September, with four anticipating two. That is his reading of the projections, not an FOMC commitment. He also says US inflation remains above a comfortable level, citing energy costs, and sees one or two further hikes as possible.
Why foreign investors have pulled back from India
Roy says foreign investor interest in India has been interrupted rather than the country’s long-term case fundamentally impaired. He attributes the relative shift in flows to stronger growth prospects in AI-beneficiary economies in East Asia and elsewhere, perceived AI disruption to India’s incumbent IT-services industry, and elevated valuations in parts of the Indian market amid domestic retail demand.

Roy says foreign institutional investors sold more than around US$50 billion in India’s secondary market over the two years preceding his October 5, 2026, interview, while redirecting a significant portion of capital to primary-market investment. That figure and explanation are interview-reported and have not been independently validated here. He says a reversal in the US AI trade could encourage broader global diversification, but sustained FII interest in India would also depend on relative earnings growth, valuations and macroeconomic conditions. These are market interpretations, not measured causal findings.

Roy identifies higher inflation, rate expectations, real yields and a stronger dollar as near-term headwinds for gold. He says real rates rose roughly 40 basis points in three weeks, describing it as one of the sharpest moves over such a period; this is a figure he gave in the interview, not an independently verified measurement. His broader point is that inflation alone does not guarantee a gold rally: real rates, the dollar and growth also matter.
At the same time, Roy sees support for gold ownership from geopolitical uncertainty, inflation concerns and a shortage of compelling alternatives. He interprets the September pullback after August’s rally as reflecting changing expectations for Fed policy and softer ETF flows rather than weakening fundamental demand. These are Roy’s market views, not individualized investment advice.

Roy expects mid-cap earnings growth to outpace large-cap growth over the next four quarters, naming new-age digital businesses, financials and metals as potential drivers. He forecasts that some new-age companies could move from cumulative losses in FY26 toward breakeven and profits as operating leverage and unit economics improve. These are expectations, not confirmed earnings results.
Why Roy remains bullish on the long-term AI cycle
Roy’s long-term view of the technology cycle is bullish, but he expects volatility. His framework rests on three questions:

- Adoption and utility: whether AI tools achieve broad, useful adoption.
- Returns on investment: whether large language model companies can generate adequate returns and repay heavy investment.
- Timing of impact: whether markets overestimate AI’s near-term effects while underestimating its longer-term change.
He identifies high capital needs, uncertain unit economics and leverage as risks. In his view, a major breakthrough would be signaled if the profit pool shifted from chipmakers to AI companies or application-layer firms.
