D-Link’s September 2026 security advisory identifies firmware A_101 for the DIR-822A as affected by two reported vulnerabilities: a DHCP-related stack buffer overflow and an L2TP parser out-of-bounds write. The investigation remains open. D-Link has not confirmed which hardware revisions or regions are affected, or whether an update or replacement is available. Check your exact model, hardware revision and installed firmware, and limit the router’s exposure while D-Link investigates.
Is your DIR-822A affected?
D-Link’s Technical Support announcement SAP10516 names the DIR-822A running firmware A_101. It does not establish that every hardware revision or regional variant is affected: both the hardware revision and geographic scope remain under review. The advisory was published September 18, 2026, and updated September 21, 2026. D-Link Technical Support security announcement SAP10516
Check the model name, hardware revision and firmware version shown on the device label and in its administration interface. The exact menu labels can vary by firmware, so use the interface for your device rather than relying on a universal click path. Compare all three details with the support information for your region. If the firmware is A_101, treat the device as within the advisory’s named scope; if your revision or region is unclear, contact regional D-Link support rather than assuming it is either affected or exempt.

How the two reported vulnerabilities differ
The advisory describes two separate network-reachable issues. Their components, stated access requirements and severity scores differ:
#1 Best Overall
- AC1200 dual-band speeds up to 300 Mbps (2.4 GHz) plus 867 Mbps (5 GHz)
- High-Power amplifiers provide wider coverage
- Mesh Smart Roaming connects your mobile devices to the strongest Wi-Fi signal as you roam
- MU-MIMO technology sends data to more devices simultaneously
- Gigabit Ethernet Internet WAN port ready for high-speed internet connections
| CVE | Component and issue | Access requirement reported | Severity scores |
|---|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-86296 | Stack-based buffer overflow in udhcpcd, associated with strcpy in udhcpcd/serverpacket.c |
Network attack vector; no authentication or user interaction required, according to D-Link | CVSS 3.1: 10.0; CVSS 4.0: 10.0, per D-Link’s advisory |
| CVE-2026-86510 | Out-of-bounds write in the L2TP Control Message Parser’s tunnel_set_params function |
Network attack vector; low privileges required and no user interaction, according to D-Link | CVSS 3.1: 9.9; CVSS 4.0: 9.4, per the CVE record |
CVE-2026-86296: DHCP buffer overflow
D-Link says a specially crafted request can overflow a stack buffer in the DHCP client daemon, potentially causing memory corruption that affects confidentiality, integrity or availability. The advisory says authentication is not required and reports a public proof of concept. D-Link Technical Support security announcement SAP10516
CVE-2026-86510: L2TP out-of-bounds write
This flaw is in the L2TP control-message parsing path. D-Link lists low privileges as required and reports a public proof of concept. The CVE record, published September 8, 2026, describes the issue as remotely launchable and says the exploit has been publicly disclosed and may be used. Those statements describe exposure and disclosure, not confirmation that attacks have occurred. The record names VulDB as the assigning CNA. CVE-2026-86510 record

CVSS scores are severity assessments, not counts of incidents or proof of exploitation. The cited advisory and CVE record do not establish an exploitation rate or confirmed in-the-wild attacks.
What to do while D-Link investigates
- Verify the device details. Record the full model, hardware revision and installed firmware. D-Link warns that hardware revisions may not be compatible with the same firmware.
- Reduce internet exposure. D-Link advises: “Ensure the device is not unnecessarily exposed to the public Internet.” Avoid exposing router services that are not needed.
- Restrict remote management. Disable remote administration if you do not need it. If it is necessary, limit access to trusted systems and users.
- Limit administrative access. Use firewall or network-access controls to allow router administration only from trusted devices and networks.
- Watch regional D-Link support. Check the support site applicable to your location for an update or revised guidance. Install firmware only when D-Link identifies it for the exact model and hardware revision.
These are exposure-reduction steps, not a fix for either vulnerability. D-Link says its security bulletins provide enough information for customers to assess impact and action while withholding details that could help someone craft an exploit. D-Link Technical Support

Is a firmware update or replacement available?
The advisory does not state that a firmware update is available or appropriate, and it does not instruct all users to replace the router. Product lifecycle status is still under review. D-Link says it will provide retirement and replacement guidance if it determines the product is no longer supported. Until then, do not install firmware intended for another hardware revision or assume that a patch or replacement recommendation exists.
