D-Link’s DIR-822A security advisory lists CVE-2026-86510 as under investigation and reports that a public proof of concept (PoC) exists. The advisory identifies DIR-822A firmware version A_101, but names no fixed firmware release. That means no fix is identified in the advisory—not that D-Link has ruled out issuing one. D-Link also has not confirmed the model’s applicable hardware revisions, regional scope, or lifecycle status. D-Link advisory SAP10516 was updated on 21 September 2026.
What is the DIR-822A L2TP flaw?
D-Link identifies CVE-2026-86510 as an out-of-bounds write in tunnel_set_params, part of the DIR-822A’s L2TP Control Message Parser. The advisory lists firmware version A_101 as the reported version. An out-of-bounds write occurs when software writes data beyond the intended bounds of a memory area; the advisory does not describe a confirmed attack outcome or provide evidence of successful exploitation.
D-Link reports that a public PoC has been reported. Public exploit code can make a vulnerability easier to investigate or attempt to exploit, but this report alone does not show that attackers are using it in the wild.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe advisory gives the issue CVSS v3.1 9.9 (Critical) and CVSS v4.0 9.4 (Critical), reproducing the published CVE scores. The published vector describes a network attack with low complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. These severity ratings are assessments, not proof of exploitation.

Is there a patch for the D-Link DIR-822A L2TP flaw?
No fixed firmware version is identified in D-Link’s reviewed advisory. The product table lists the security update as under investigation. D-Link said it was checking affected hardware and regional scope, lifecycle status, and whether a firmware update was available or appropriate. Because the notice remains open, it is more accurate to say that the advisory does not identify a fix than to say D-Link will not issue one.
Check D-Link’s regional support pages and security notices for updates. A firmware file for a similarly named DIR-822 variant is not a substitute: D-Link cautions that firmware can differ by hardware revision.

Is the DIR-822A vulnerable if L2TP is enabled?
The advisory locates the flaw in the L2TP Control Message Parser, but the reviewed notice does not establish whether enabling or disabling L2TP alone determines exposure, nor does it confirm that turning the feature off fully mitigates the issue. Do not treat disabling L2TP as a verified fix. Until D-Link clarifies the conditions, follow its broader advice to reduce unnecessary network exposure and restrict administration.

What should DIR-822A owners do?
Identify the exact router and firmware
- Read the product label or the router’s web interface and record the complete model name and hardware revision.
- Check the installed firmware version in the web interface. Compare it with notices for that exact model and revision, rather than relying on a file or instructions for a different DIR-822 variant.
- Check D-Link support for your region for a newer advisory or a firmware release that explicitly matches your device.
Reduce exposure while the status is unresolved
- Avoid exposing the router unnecessarily to the public Internet. D-Link’s guidance says, “Ensure the device is not unnecessarily exposed to the public Internet.”
- Restrict remote management unless you need it.
- Use network controls to limit administration to trusted systems.
- Monitor D-Link’s regional support notices for scope and remediation updates.
Do not install an arbitrary firmware image or assume that a different hardware revision’s update is compatible. D-Link’s guidance is to use firmware for the exact model and revision.

Does the older DIR-822 end-of-life notice apply to the DIR-822A?
Not on the evidence in the reviewed notices. D-Link’s January 2024 lifecycle notice covers non-US DIR-822 A/B variants and recommends retiring and replacing products it confirms as end-of-life/end-of-service (EOL/EOS). It separately lists US/Canada C/E revisions. That notice does not establish the DIR-822A’s current lifecycle; the newer DIR-822A advisory says its lifecycle and product scope remain under confirmation. D-Link advisory SAP10516 and DIR-822 lifecycle notice SAP10372 address distinct product scopes.
If D-Link confirms that your particular router is unsupported—or you choose to retire it—replacing it with a router that has current security support is a reasonable option. The notices do not name a successor model or specify minimum features, so check the replacement’s support commitment and compatibility with your network before buying.

Keep the separate DIR-822A vulnerability distinct
CVE-2026-86296 concerns a stack-based buffer overflow in the DIR-822A’s udhcpcd component. It is a separate issue from CVE-2026-86510 in the L2TP parser and should not be used to infer the L2TP flaw’s patch status. GitHub Advisory Database record for CVE-2026-86296.
