Two D.C. residents have been charged in a seven-count superseding indictment over an alleged scheme to obtain apartment leases with stolen or fabricated identities, avoid rent and bills, and move money through Bitcoin and Cash App accounts. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the charges on October 2, 2026; the court docket identifies the case as 26-cr-142.
What prosecutors say happened
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, from at least November 2023 to the present, Maliktra Derenorcourt, Philippe Oliver Gadie and others allegedly sought residential leases at apartment complexes in Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. Prosecutors allege applications included stolen or fabricated Social Security numbers, so-called Credit Privacy Numbers, and fabricated employment letters.
The alleged applications were used to gain access to apartments. Prosecutors say participants lived in some units and sold access to other units to third parties for a fraction of the lease value, while rent and bills went unpaid. The DOJ says nearly all apartments fraudulently leased in the alleged scheme led to eviction proceedings for nonpayment.

How Bitcoin and Cash App allegedly fit in
Prosecutors allege participants used Bitcoin and Cash App accounts opened under stolen or fabricated identities to transfer money among themselves. The DOJ says Gadie allegedly used one victim’s name, Social Security number and date of birth to open a Cash App account that conducted hundreds of transactions in that victim’s name. The investigation into the accounts is ongoing.
Who is charged and what the case record confirms
The DOJ identifies the defendants as D.C. residents Maliktra Derenorcourt and Philippe Oliver Gadie. The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia’s public listing identifies the case as 26-cr-142, USA v. Gadie, and lists an October 1, 2026 filing titled “Order Unsealing Upon Arrest.” That docket information confirms the procedural record and timing; it does not establish the allegations as fact.

A superseding indictment is a formal accusation, not proof that the defendants committed the charged conduct. The DOJ states that both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court. The court’s unsealing entry is procedural and does not decide the merits of the case.
