Cygni Energy and Indus Towers have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore battery energy storage systems (BESS) for telecom infrastructure in India. The proposal includes evaluating sourcing, deployment and manufacturing options, with reported manufacturing capacity of up to 1.5 GWh. That figure is a proposed scale to assess—not capacity already built or batteries already installed.
What the Cygni Energy–Indus Towers MoU covers
Cygni Energy, an energy-storage technology and manufacturing company incubated at IIT Madras, and Indus Towers, a telecom tower infrastructure company, are examining storage solutions for telecom applications. Their MoU is an agreement to explore collaboration, including sourcing and evaluating BESS and assessing advanced battery technologies for telecom use. pv magazine India and Business Standard reported the announcement on October 5, 2026.
The announcement does not establish a final supply contract, a confirmed factory build, or a deployment schedule. It also does not specify a factory location, contract value, battery chemistry for the telecom systems, or how many sites might receive equipment under this proposal.

How much battery capacity is proposed?
The MoU coverage describes evaluation of up to 1.5 GWh of BESS manufacturing capacity. This is a proposed capacity figure, not a report of current production or deployed storage. Separately, Cygni founder and CEO Venkat Rajaraman said the company plans to develop capacity of up to 2 GWh. That company-wide plan is distinct from the MoU’s up-to-1.5-GWh figure; neither establishes current output. Business Standard’s October 5 report gives the two figures in their respective contexts.

Rajaraman also described Cygni’s portfolio as evolving from 100Ah solutions toward 314Ah systems and emerging battery technologies. These ampere-hour (Ah) figures describe battery capacity, while GWh measures energy; they are not directly comparable. Why battery storage matters for telecom towers
Telecom sites need dependable power to keep network equipment operating. Battery banks can provide backup when grid supply is interrupted and can work alongside other power sources at distributed sites. Indus Towers’ FY2024–25 Integrated Report says the company used lithium-ion and valve-regulated lead-acid battery banks across sites. It also reports that more than 38,000 high-efficiency lithium-ion batteries had been deployed as of March 2025. Those are existing operational figures, not results of the new MoU. The report separately says Indus expanded distributed solar infrastructure to more than 15,000 sites during FY2024–25; that is broader energy context, not a BESS deployment count. The companies’ announcement frames the work as more than battery supply. Rajaraman said: “For us, this initiative goes beyond supplying batteries. It is about building the scale, technology capabilities and manufacturing readiness required to support the evolving energy needs of one of the world’s largest passive telecom infrastructure companies.” pv magazine India
Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor at IIT Madras and Chairman of the ITEL Foundation, described telecom as an application area for advancing battery technology and manufacturing: “Collaboration between users, startups, manufacturers and technology institutions can support the development and adoption of energy storage solutions in India. How this differs from Indus Towers’ Replus agreement
Indus Towers also signed a separate MoU with Replus Engitech, reported on September 30, 2026. The two agreements both refer to 1.5 GWh, but the descriptions and partners differ.

What has not been confirmed
- A finalized supply or purchase contract for the Cygni collaboration.
- A factory location, construction schedule, or confirmed production start.
- The battery chemistry selected for telecom deployments.
- The number of telecom sites or batteries that would be covered by this MoU.
Cygni’s website describes its broader large-scale BESS and commercial and industrial solution segments, but the MoU announcement does not identify a retail product model or a consumer purchase route. Cygni Energy
