Alaska offers several ways to study cybersecurity, but they serve different goals: UAF lists a graduate certificate for students who already have a bachelor’s degree, UAA offers cybersecurity coursework within a Computer Information Systems minor, and an older UAF Community & Technical College catalog lists career-oriented IT credentials. If you do not have a bachelor’s degree, start by checking the technical-college options and confirming that they are still offered.
Cybersecurity study options in Alaska
| Route | Institution | Credential and scope | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate study | University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) | Cybersecurity Management Graduate Certificate, 12 credits; covers information assurance and risk assessment, cybersecurity and critical infrastructure, cyber threats and vulnerabilities, plus one of four electives. | Requires a completed bachelor’s degree and relevant IT, networking, or cybersecurity preparation or experience. Other entry conditions apply. UAF 2026–2027 catalog |
| Career-oriented technical study | UAF Community & Technical College | IT Specialist A.A.S. with a Network and Cybersecurity concentration; Cybersecurity Foundations occupational endorsement; and IT Specialist certificate, as listed in the 2023–2024 catalog. | The catalog is older, so confirm the programs remain available and check current award requirements. UAF 2023–2024 catalog |
| Cybersecurity coursework alongside another degree | University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) | Computer Information Systems minor with an 18-credit cybersecurity track. | This is a minor, not a stand-alone cybersecurity bachelor’s degree. UAA catalog |
| Other workforce credentials | University of Alaska System | The system describes short-term occupational endorsements and two-year credentials among its workforce-learning routes. | The general workforce page does not confirm that a cybersecurity-specific option is available at every campus. Does UAF offer a cybersecurity degree?
UAF lists a Cybersecurity Management Graduate Certificate, not a stand-alone cybersecurity degree, in its 2026–2027 graduate catalog. The certificate is 12 credits and focuses on management-oriented subjects including information assurance, risk assessment, critical infrastructure, threats, and vulnerabilities. Its graduate level matters: applicants need a completed bachelor’s degree and relevant preparation or experience, with additional conditions described in the catalog.
UAF Community & Technical College’s 2023–2024 catalog lists a different route: an IT Specialist associate degree with a Network and Cybersecurity concentration, alongside a Cybersecurity Foundations occupational endorsement and an IT Specialist certificate. The catalog describes the broader program as preparation for IT careers and industry certification. Because this listing is from an older catalog year, check with the college whether each credential is currently available and what it requires.
Can you study cybersecurity in Alaska without a bachelor’s degree?
Yes, the documented options include undergraduate technical credentials that do not appear to be graduate programs. The UAF graduate certificate, by contrast, expressly requires a completed bachelor’s degree. For the technical-college credentials, consult the current program information for admission and completion requirements rather than assuming the older catalog listing is unchanged.
#1 Best Overall
UAF Community & Technical College
The older catalog frames the A.A.S. as practical IT preparation: “The associate degree teaches students how to implement, support and troubleshoot computer and information technology systems.” It identifies Network and Cybersecurity as a concentration. The catalog also describes certificates as preparation for entry-level IT support and as a possible starting point toward the associate degree. These descriptions can help you judge the route’s emphasis, but they do not establish current availability or guarantee a particular job outcome.
UAA
UAA’s Computer Information Systems minor includes an 18-credit cybersecurity track. Its listed foundations include computer concepts, programming, databases, and data communications and networks, plus two advisor-approved related electives. It is designed as a component of broader undergraduate study, not as a complete cybersecurity major.
How to choose the right route
- Choose by credential level: The UAF graduate certificate is for applicants who already hold a bachelor’s degree; the UAF technical-college listings are associate-degree and certificate routes; UAA’s option is a minor to add to another undergraduate program.
- Match the curriculum to your goal: UAF’s graduate certificate emphasizes cybersecurity management and risk topics. The UAF technical-college program is broader IT and systems preparation with a network and cybersecurity concentration. UAA’s track combines computing foundations with cybersecurity electives.
- Check fit with your background: For UAF’s graduate certificate, the catalog calls for IT, networking, or cybersecurity education or related work experience, subject to review and approval by the program director. It also describes additional entry-course or testing rules depending on prior field and GPA. Ask the program director to assess your eligibility.
- Verify logistics before applying: Ask the institution about the current catalog year, admission and award requirements, location or online availability, tuition and fees, financial aid, course schedule, and sequencing. The cited pages do not provide comparable current details for these specific options.
What to verify with each institution
Program listings do not by themselves establish that a course is offered in the next term, that a credential can be completed online, or that a particular campus currently delivers it. Contact the relevant program office before making plans. Confirm the credential’s current status, requirements, delivery format, location, costs, financial-aid options, and the courses needed to complete it.

The University of Alaska System describes short occupational endorsements and two-year degrees as part of its workforce-learning pathways, but its general workforce information is not confirmation of a cybersecurity program at every campus. No Alaska-specific salary, employment, or student-outcome figure is established by the program sources cited here, so compare programs on their documented curriculum and requirements rather than assuming a particular job result.
