Your home Wi-Fi connects more than your laptop: phones, cameras, TVs and other smart devices share the same internet connection. Securing the router and the devices on it reduces avoidable risks, including the chance that an infected device could be misused without your knowledge. The FBI warned on March 12, 2026, that criminals use residential proxy networks to route activity through home and small-business internet connections. That does not mean every remote worker or household is affected; it is a reason to keep your network and devices protected.
What the FBI warning means for your home
A residential proxy network routes internet activity through residential or small-business connections, which can help criminals obscure where their activity originated. In its March 12, 2026 public service announcement, the FBI describes this as a threat involving the misuse of residential connections. It is distinct from simply working remotely: using your home Wi-Fi for an employer-approved work connection does not by itself make your household a proxy network.
Practical protections include keeping devices and apps updated and downloading apps only from sources you trust. No single router setting, VPN, or retail security product is a complete solution.
Secure your router and Wi-Fi
Router settings and menu names differ by manufacturer and internet provider. Use the router maker’s instructions or ask your ISP for the exact steps, especially for ISP-supplied equipment. The Federal Trade Commission’s “How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network” (December 2022) recommends these core controls:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Install available router updates. Check the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions for firmware updates and apply them when available.
- Use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption. The FTC says, “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information.” The router and connected devices need to support the encryption you select.
- Change both default passwords. Set a strong, unique Wi-Fi password and a different password for the router’s administrator account. The admin password controls router settings; changing only the Wi-Fi password leaves that separate access unchanged.
- Turn off remote management if you do not need it. Remote management allows router settings to be reached from outside the home. Consult the manufacturer or ISP if you are unsure whether a service depends on it.
- Disable WPS and UPnP if they are not needed. These convenience features can be useful for some devices, but households that do not use them can turn them off in the router settings.
- Enable the router firewall if it is available and not already enabled. Check the router’s documentation for its status and controls.
- Create a guest network for visitors and devices you want to keep separate from your main network, if your router supports it.
Protect phones, computers, and smart devices
A secure Wi-Fi password is only one layer: every connected device and account still needs basic protection. The FTC’s “Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home” recommends keeping connected devices and software current, changing default credentials, and using available two-factor authentication.
- Install operating-system and app updates. Turn on automatic updates where practical, and update devices that may not be used every day, such as cameras or smart-home hubs.
- Replace factory-set usernames and passwords. Use a different, strong password for each device or account; do not reuse the router’s Wi-Fi password for device administration.
- Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) where offered. A second verification step makes a password alone less likely to be enough to access an account. Available methods vary by service; the FTC lists hardware tokens as one possible method, but a security key is optional and must be compatible with the account and device.
- Review the router’s connected-device list. Check it periodically for devices you do not recognize. If an entry is unclear, compare it with household devices or ask the router maker or ISP before blocking it.
If you work from home, follow your employer’s controls
Home-network settings do not replace your employer’s security requirements for work accounts, devices, and data. FTC small-business guidance, “Cybersecurity for Small Business,” covers secure remote access, current software, encryption, MFA, and staff practices. CISA’s “Federal Mobile Workplace Security” (August 14, 2024) addresses telework and home-network security for federal mobile work.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Use the employer-approved method for remote access, such as its required VPN or other secure connection, and follow its instructions for work accounts.
- Keep work devices updated and use device encryption where appropriate and supported. FTC guidance recommends considering full-disk encryption for mobile work devices.
- Report a lost work device or suspected compromise promptly through your employer’s incident-reporting process.
- Do not install personal security software on an employer- or agency-furnished device if that conflicts with its instructions.
When to replace a router
First check whether a software update adds support for current Wi-Fi encryption. If the router still offers only outdated WPA or WEP rather than WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal, consider replacing it; contact your ISP if it supplied the router. When choosing a replacement, check encryption support, how the manufacturer delivers firmware updates, firewall features, and compatibility with your ISP service. The cited federal guidance does not rank brands or specific router models.
