No verified source in the available record says that funding for the CVE Program expires on October 8, 2026. The headline refers to a real concern raised in April 2025, but CISA said that episode was a contract-administration issue resolved before any lapse and that CVE operations were not interrupted. The current contract’s end date is not established by the public sources cited here.

What happened with MITRE and CVE funding?

In April 2025, reports raised concern about MITRE’s support contract for the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) Program. On April 23, 2025, CISA Acting Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity Matt Hartman addressed those reports, saying: “To set the record straight, there was no funding issue, but rather a contract administration issue that was resolved prior to a contract lapse.” CISA said the program had not been interrupted. CISA’s statement described CVE as a CISA-sponsored program.

That account corrects the impression that the 2025 episode resulted in a shutdown. It does not establish the term or expiration date of the current CISA–MITRE arrangement. The official sources cited here do not verify an October 8, 2026 funding expiration.

What does the CVE Program do?

CVE is a shared identification and cataloging system for publicly disclosed cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Its mission is to identify, define, and catalog those vulnerabilities so that security teams, software vendors, researchers, and tools can refer to the same issue using a common identifier. The CVE Program website makes CVE records and program resources available to the public.

The program’s work includes coordinating CVE Numbering Authorities (CNAs), which assign identifiers and publish vulnerability records under the program. In its April 2025 statement, CISA said MITRE, CISA, and the CVE Board had built a federated capability involving 453 CNAs. That is the number reported in that statement, not a current count.

Would CVE IDs and records continue during a disruption?

In a September 30, 2025 update, the CVE Program said that essential functions would continue in the event of a potential lapse in federal appropriations. It specifically named CNA assignment and CVE record publication. The update addressed a possible appropriations lapse; it should not be read as proof of the current CISA–MITRE contract’s funding term. CVE Program operational update.

These distinctions matter: contract or funding status, day-to-day core operations, and program quality and governance are related but separate questions. A continuity assurance about identifier assignment and record publication does not, by itself, disclose who is funding each activity today or when a contract ends.

What is known about CISA’s longer-term plans?

CISA’s September 10, 2025 strategic vision for CVE quality said that the program’s infrastructure and core services require ongoing CISA investment. It also noted community requests for alternative funding sources and said CISA would update the community as it evaluated ways to diversify funding. The vision discussed improving the quality of CVE records; it did not announce a contract expiration date. CISA’s strategic vision reported that, in August 2025, 79.9% of CNAs that had published a record in the preceding six months included CVSS and CWE information in their publication. That figure applies only to that stated period and group.

On September 23, 2026, CISA announced a quality framework for a program-wide maturation effort. That announcement is evidence of ongoing policy and quality work, not evidence of the current funding source or contract term. CISA’s quality-framework announcement.

What can current public activity tell us?

As of October 8, 2026, the CVE website displayed more than 384,000 accessible records and listed an upcoming workshop. Those changing site details show public-facing activity at the time they were viewed, but they do not establish the program’s funding arrangements or contract expiration date. The CVE Program homepage is the place to check for current program resources and updates.
