CVE-2026-94127 is a critical, unauthenticated remote-code-execution vulnerability in F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM), but the reported exposure is conditional: the affected virtual server must have both an APM access policy and an OAuth profile configured. Public reporting describes RCE in the data plane—not confirmed execution as root—and says the control plane is not exposed.
What the documented attack path establishes
The GitHub Advisory Database describes CVE-2026-94127 as a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122) triggered by specific malicious traffic sent to a BIG-IP virtual server configured with an APM access policy and an OAuth profile. An attacker does not need to authenticate to achieve the reported remote code execution. Appliance-mode systems are also affected.
The advisory characterizes the vulnerability as affecting the data plane and explicitly says there is no control-plane exposure. That distinction matters: the documented outcome is code execution in the data plane, not a demonstrated compromise of the BIG-IP management plane.
Does the attacker reach root?
Despite the “to Root” wording in the original topic, the reviewed public reporting does not establish that the vulnerable code executes as the root user, provide a privilege-context analysis, or demonstrate a transition from data-plane RCE to root. Root-level execution should therefore be treated as unverified, not as a confirmed step in the attack path.

Which BIG-IP virtual servers are in scope?
The reported prerequisite is the combination of an APM access policy and an OAuth profile on the same virtual server; this is not described as a vulnerability affecting every BIG-IP deployment by default. Expert Insights’ summary of F5’s advisory adds that APM must be acting as an OAuth authorization server, and says use strictly as an OAuth client or resource server is unaffected. That role-specific distinction is secondary-source reporting, so verify it against F5’s current advisory, K000162605, before relying on it for a deployment decision.
- Potentially exposed: A network-reachable virtual server has both the reported APM and OAuth configuration.
- Additional reported scope detail: Expert Insights says the relevant APM role is OAuth authorization server, rather than OAuth client or resource server.
- Also affected: BIG-IP running in Appliance mode.
- Not established as safe: Releases that have reached End of Technical Support were not evaluated, according to the advisory record.

The reported severity scores use different CVSS versions: the GitHub Advisory Database gives CVSS v4 9.3, while Rapid7 reports CVSS v3.1 9.8. They are not directly comparable as though they were competing scores from one scoring system.

On September 22, 2026, Rapid7 reported that F5 had confirmed exploitation in the wild and that CISA had added the CVE to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Rapid7 said a publicly available proof of concept had not been confirmed at the time of its report. That is a dated observation, not a statement about whether a proof of concept or additional exploit details are available now.

How to check exposure and respond
- Inventory versions and virtual servers. Identify BIG-IP release trains and installed versions, then find every virtual server where an APM access policy and OAuth profile coexist. Where the role distinction affects your assessment, establish whether APM is configured as an OAuth authorization server.
- Verify the current vendor guidance. Consult F5 advisory K000162605 for release-specific applicability and updated remediation instructions; the hotfix list above is what Rapid7 reported on September 22, 2026.
- Apply the applicable F5 hotfix. Rapid7 recommends applying the appropriate engineering hotfix as soon as operationally feasible. Follow F5’s instructions for the specific software version and deployment.
- If patching must wait, contact F5 Support. Rapid7 reports that F5 makes an iRule workaround available through Support. Request it through a support case and implement it only under F5’s guidance; do not substitute an improvised rule.
- Assess possible compromise. Use your organization’s incident-response procedures to evaluate potentially exposed systems. The reviewed reporting confirms exploitation but does not provide validated CVE-specific forensic indicators or a detailed hunt procedure.
- Check security-product coverage separately. Rapid7 reported that Exposure Command, Vulnerability Management, and Nexpose checks were expected in its September 23, 2026 content release. Confirm current coverage with Rapid7; a product check does not replace review of the actual virtual-server configuration or vendor remediation.
