CVE-2026-86060 is a RouterOS SSH privilege-escalation flaw, not by itself an authentication bypass. The unauthenticated takeover reported by CERT Polska requires chaining it with the separate CVE-2026-67276 SSH authentication flaw—and the router’s SSH service must be reachable from the internet. The practical response is to install the fixed release for your RouterOS branch, restrict management access, and check for signs of compromise.

What CVE-2026-86060 does—and what it does not do

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security classifies CVE-2026-86060 as CWE-88, improper neutralization of argument delimiters (argument injection), and says it may allow remote privilege escalation. CERT Polska explains that RouterOS mishandled SSH usernames beginning with a disallowed character: a crafted username could elevate the resulting session to full administrative privileges. That describes the privilege-escalation stage; it does not mean this CVE alone lets an unauthenticated attacker log in.

The no-credentials scenario involves a second vulnerability. CVE-2026-67276 affected SSH public-key verification. According to CERT Polska, RouterOS did not compare the entire RSA public key assigned to a user. An attacker who knew the username and public modulus could craft a different key and log in without the matching private key, gaining that account’s privileges. Chaining this authentication bypass with CVE-2026-86060 could yield full control without authentication if SSH was reachable from a public network.

CERT Polska reported active exploitation, with observed attacks beginning at least September 2, 2026—not necessarily the first exploitation ever. Its report says the released patches prevent the observed attacks. The Canadian advisory says CISA added CVE-2026-67277 and CVE-2026-86060 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on September 10, 2026. CERT Polska lists a CVSS score of 9.2 for CVE-2026-86060; that severity score is not a measure of how many routers have been compromised.

Which RouterOS versions fix the issue?

Install the fixed release for the branch your device uses, or a later supported release. The fixed versions below are listed by MikroTik and mapped to RouterOS branches by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.

RouterOS branch Fixed release
6.x 6.49.21
7.x long-term 7.23.4
7.x stable 7.24.2
Development 7.25 beta 3
  1. Identify the device’s RouterOS branch and installed version.
  2. Upgrade to the corresponding fixed release or a later supported release.
  3. After upgrading, verify that the router is running the updated version.

MikroTik’s September 3, 2026 bulletin says, “Most configurations are not at risk, but upgrading is highly recommended.” Treat that as the vendor’s general statement, not as a determination that a particular router is safe.

How to reduce exposure before you can patch

If you cannot upgrade immediately, reduce the router’s exposure while arranging the update. CERT Polska recommends disabling exposed services or restricting them to trusted management networks, especially SSH, WWW/WWW-SSL, and the bandwidth-test server. MikroTik advises against exposing SSH to untrusted networks; use access controls for trusted IP addresses or a VPN such as WireGuard instead of opening management ports to the internet.

CERT Polska also cautions against initiating TLS connections or using RouterOS built-in SSH clients from an unpatched device in the circumstances described in its advisory. These measures reduce exposure temporarily; they do not replace installing the fixed release.

How to check whether a router may be compromised

Upgrade first, then investigate the device’s logs and configuration. CERT Polska observed attacks against internet-accessible RouterOS devices and stresses that the absence of a particular log entry or status marker does not rule out unauthorized activity.

Review logs and status

  • Look for the observed log entries login failure for user -2 from <ip> via ssh and user <name> added by ssh:-2@<ip>. Treat either as a reason for immediate investigation; the listed patterns are indicators, not a complete set of possible traces.
  • Investigate an unexpected highly privileged account named ops, which CERT Polska identifies as an additional indicator.
  • Check RouterOS logs and device-mode output for a Flagged status. MikroTik says RouterOS checks devices for compromise and marks some as Flagged in the log. The RouterOS manual explains that startup configuration analysis can disable suspicious entries and set the flagged parameter.

A Flagged indication warrants assuming compromise and performing a full audit. An unflagged device is not thereby proven clean: CERT Polska and the RouterOS manual both warn that absence of the marker does not establish safety.

Inspect for unexplained changes

  • Unknown user accounts or unexpected privilege changes.
  • Unrecognized scripts or scheduler tasks.
  • Unexpected proxy servers or tunnels.
  • Other configuration changes you cannot explain.

Also review authentication logs and network activity for unauthorized access. The Canadian advisory recommends that administrators investigate for compromise; the indicators above are not an exhaustive forensic checklist.

What to do if compromise is suspected

  1. Isolate the router from untrusted networks to limit further access.
  2. Preserve logs and configuration before resetting the device, so potentially useful incident evidence is not lost.
  3. Rebuild from a configuration you can verify. Do not blindly restore a full backup taken from a potentially compromised router.
  4. Change passwords, keys, and other secrets that may have been exposed.
  5. After recovery, apply the fixed release and keep management services restricted to trusted networks.

For an organization, involve its incident-response team or a qualified network-security professional if the scope or integrity of the device is uncertain.
