Arris TG2482A, TG2492 and SBG10 gateways were reported vulnerable to CVE-2022-45701 when running firmware in the 9.1.103 line. The flaw can let an authenticated attacker run commands on a device. Reports from 2023 described the affected models as end-of-life and unsupported, so owners should not assume a vendor patch is coming: check the model and firmware with your ISP, change the device password, disable remote administration if available, and arrange a supported replacement if the ISP cannot provide a fix.
Which Arris routers are covered by the vulnerability reports?
The evidence is specific to certain models and firmware; it does not establish that every Arris router is affected. MITRE’s CVE record describes Arris TG2482A firmware through version 9.1.103GEM9 as vulnerable. In a February 16, 2023 report, Malwarebytes said the exploit was tested on TG2482A, TG2492 and SBG10 devices running firmware 9.1.103.
| Model or firmware | What the reports establish |
|---|---|
| TG2482A | MITRE lists firmware through 9.1.103GEM9; Malwarebytes reported testing the exploit on firmware 9.1.103. |
| TG2492 | Malwarebytes reported testing the exploit on firmware 9.1.103. MITRE’s cited record specifically names TG2482A. |
| SBG10 | Malwarebytes reported testing the exploit on firmware 9.1.103. MITRE’s cited record specifically names TG2482A. |
| Other Arris models or firmware | Not established by these reports. |
SecurityWeek spelled the first model “G2482A” in its headline; MITRE and Malwarebytes use “TG2482A.” Check the label on the gateway and ask your ISP to confirm both the exact model and installed firmware. Cable gateways are often supplied and managed by an ISP, and model names alone may not settle whether a particular unit is exposed.

This is a remote-code-execution (RCE) flaw, not simply a way to read information from the gateway. MITRE describes it as allowing RCE through the device’s ping utility feature. The underlying issue is improper handling of special characters in a command-building path: researcher Yerodin Richards demonstrated that filtering could be bypassed to inject shell commands.

“Authenticated” means the attacker needs credentials to use the vulnerable functionality. It does not mean the attack is harmless or that credentials are necessarily difficult to obtain. Malwarebytes reported that users might still have default credentials and that the setup had no HTTPS option to protect credentials in transit. Richards warned that unprotected traffic could expose credentials to eavesdropping or manipulation; he also identified default credentials as a potential attraction for botnets. These are risk factors, not evidence that a particular gateway has been compromised. The cited reports do not establish a number of affected households or confirmed infections.
Does end-of-life mean Arris will not patch it?
Malwarebytes reported in February 2023 that Arris, acquired by CommScope, considered the affected devices end-of-life and no longer supported. SecurityWeek also reported that the models were unlikely to receive patches. Those reports are a reason not to count on a vendor firmware update, but they do not establish the present support status of every ISP-provisioned unit or whether an ISP has separately supplied firmware. Ask your provider whether your exact model and firmware have a fix, whether it can install one, and whether it will replace the gateway.

What should you do if you have one?
- Confirm the device and firmware. Read the model number from the gateway label and check its status page or ISP account for the firmware version. If the interface does not show it, ask the ISP to identify the installed version and confirm whether the unit is affected.
- Change the gateway’s administrator password. Replace any default or reused password with a unique, strong one. This can make credential guessing harder, but it does not fix the vulnerable firmware or protect credentials sent over an unencrypted connection.
- Turn off remote administration if the option is available. Use the gateway’s administration settings or ask the ISP to disable management access from outside your home network. Menus differ by model and provider, so do not assume a setting exists or that turning it off patches the flaw.
- Ask the ISP for a firmware fix or replacement. Because providers commonly provision cable gateways, the ISP may control updates and may need to supply a compatible replacement. Request a clear answer for your exact hardware and firmware rather than relying on a general statement that the network is maintained.
- Plan to replace an unsupported gateway if no fix is available. Choose hardware supported by your ISP and confirm provisioning requirements before buying or disconnecting the existing unit.
Is changing the password enough?
No. A strong password is a useful immediate measure because the flaw requires authentication, but it does not remove the command-injection vulnerability. It also cannot secure credentials if the management connection sends them without HTTPS. Richards described changing the firmware as a more complete mitigation, while noting that users generally cannot easily do this themselves and that attempting to gain a root shell and patch the device is not a simple fix. Do not treat custom firmware or exploit-based self-repair as a routine consumer workaround; ask the ISP for a supported update or replacement.
How to choose a replacement
A generic retail router may not replace an ISP-provided cable gateway. Before purchasing, establish which functions the existing unit provides and what your provider permits:

| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| ISP approval and provisioning | The provider must support and activate the specific cable modem or gateway. Confirm compatibility for your account and service tier before buying. |
| DOCSIS compatibility | Verify the DOCSIS requirements specified by your ISP; do not assume a device works with every cable network. |
| Telephone or voice service | If the gateway supplies landline service, confirm that a replacement supports the provider’s voice service or ask how voice will continue to work. |
| Firmware support and updates | Prefer a device with ongoing security support and a clear update path. Ask whether updates are automatic and who manages them. |
| Remote-administration controls | Check whether management access can be restricted and whether the ISP exposes settings that matter to you. |
| Total replacement cost | Compare the complete cost of a compatible device and any required service or installation against an ISP-provided replacement or rental option. |
If you use the Arris unit only as a modem and have a separate Wi-Fi router, replacing the gateway may still require an ISP-approved cable modem. If it also handles voice service, verify that requirement before switching. The best route is the one your provider confirms will be provisioned, supported and able to preserve the services you use.
