Custom keycaps let you change a gaming keyboard’s colors, legends, profile, texture, and overall theme. The best choice is not necessarily the most elaborate set: first confirm that it fits your switches and keyboard layout, then compare its profile, material, legends, and lighting behavior. A new set changes appearance and feel; the sources available do not establish that it improves gaming performance.
What makes keycaps “custom”?
Customization can mean choosing a ready-made themed set, selecting a project with particular colors or legends, or adding a single artisan keycap as an accent. Sets may also differ in profile, material, language legends, and the keys included. The Akko catalog illustrates this range with multiple profiles and materials, ANSI and ISO filtering, themed sets, and individual artisan caps. Listings and stock can change, so check the current product page rather than assuming every example is available.
For most buyers, an in-stock set is the straightforward route. A custom-set project is a different proposition: it involves planning a kit and production order, not simply personalizing one retail set.
Check compatibility before choosing a design
Do not assume that a set fits just because it is advertised for mechanical keyboards. Before buying, identify the keyboard’s switch stem, layout, and key sizes, then compare those details with the set’s kit contents.

- Switch stem: Check what stem the switches use. MX-style, Topre, and Choc are examples of distinct stem types covered in OSHID’s manufacturer guides; a cap made for one type should not be presumed to fit another. Proprietary and low-profile boards may also need specific caps.
- Layout: Confirm ANSI, ISO, JIS, or whichever layout your keyboard uses. A set can have the right stem but omit the keys or legends needed for your layout.
- Kit coverage and sizes: Check the included key count and the dimensions of the bottom-row keys. Compact, split, or nonstandard boards can require unusual sizes that are absent from a standard kit.
- Profile and board orientation: Check the keycap profile against your keyboard maker’s compatibility guidance. For example, NZXT Support says its Function keyboards use north-facing sockets and that Cherry-profile caps may encounter switch-to-keycap collision on those boards. That is a specific compatibility example, not a rule for every keyboard.
If the product listing does not clearly establish stem compatibility or kit coverage, consult the keyboard and keycap makers’ documentation before ordering.
Compare profile, material, and feel
Profile changes shape and height
A keycap profile describes the shape and arrangement of the keys, including their height and angle. Cherry, OEM, and XDA are among the profile names buyers encounter, but a name alone does not tell you whether a set will fit your board or feel right to you. Compare the profile with your keyboard’s switch orientation and look for product details that describe the set’s shape. Preference is personal; there is no universally best profile.

PBT and ABS are tendencies, not quality guarantees
Material can influence texture, rigidity, and wear, but the plastic name does not guarantee a particular level of quality. NZXT Support describes average ABS caps as often less expensive, smoother, thinner-walled, and more flexible, with wear potentially appearing sooner. It describes average PBT caps as often more expensive, matte, rougher, thicker-walled, and stiffer, with wear potentially appearing more slowly. These are general tendencies in NZXT’s comparison, not assurances about any individual product; compare the exact set’s specifications.
Material also varies by product even within a manufacturer’s range. GMK states in its FAQ that its CYL keycaps use ABS and its MTNU keycaps use PBT. That example does not establish the material of every GMK product or the quality of all caps made from either plastic.

Understand legends and RGB behavior
The legend is the character or symbol printed on a keycap. Its construction is separate from the cap’s material and profile.
- Dye-sublimation: NZXT Support describes this process as heating ink so it dyes the plastic surface.
- Double-shot: The cap is formed from two or more plastic layers, with the legend as a physical layer. NZXT says double-shot legends tend to be more durable than other legend types and can allow lighting effects.
Neither term alone proves that a keycap set will produce the backlighting you expect. GMK says it cannot guarantee 100% opacity and backlight compatibility across keyboards because translucence can depend on material, grid, colors, and LEDs. If shine-through legends or a particular RGB effect matter to you, verify the exact set’s lighting details rather than inferring them from its plastic or profile.

Retail sets and custom production are different choices
A retail set lets you select from designs already offered for sale. Commissioning a custom set can provide a route to project-specific colors or kits, but minimum quantities and costs can make it unsuitable for an individual purchase.

GMK says it can match or create custom colors. Its FAQ lists minimum orders of 150 sets using standard colors and 250 sets using custom colors for its custom-set projects. These are GMK’s manufacturer-specific order minimums, not general minimums for retail keycap sets; confirm current terms directly because quantities and availability may change. GMK says pricing depends on factors including the kit’s key count, colors, new legends and novelties, keycap size, and order quantity. It provides quotes to vendors and direct sellers.

A practical checklist for comparing sets
Use the product page and your keyboard’s documentation to check these details side by side:
- Does the stem match the keyboard’s switches?
- Does the kit cover the keyboard’s layout, bottom row, and any unusual key sizes?
- What profile does the set use, and is it compatible with the board?
- What material and texture does the maker specify?
- How are the legends made, and does the seller establish the shine-through behavior you need?
- Do the colors, theme, and language legends suit your setup?
- Is the option an in-stock retail kit or a custom production order with minimum quantities?
- Are current price and availability clearly stated by the seller?
Once compatibility is established, the remaining choice is personal: a subtle color change, a full themed set, a different texture or profile, or one artisan cap as a visual accent. Treat the keycap change as customization of appearance and feel, not as a proven gaming-performance upgrade.
