NASA’s Curiosity rover detected three long-chain alkanes—decane, undecane and dodecane—in a drilled mudstone sample called Cumberland from Gale crater. The finding shows that these organic molecules can be preserved in ancient Martian rock; it does not establish whether they came from life or geological processes.
What Curiosity detected in the Cumberland sample
The 2025 study by Freissinet and colleagues reports decane (C10H22), undecane (C11H24) and dodecane (C12H26) at the tens-of-picomole level. The compounds were released from Cumberland, an ancient lake mudstone drilled in Gale crater, and analyzed by Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument. The 2025 study and NASA’s mission summary describe the result.
How SAM detected the larger molecules
The team used a modified SAM analytical procedure optimized to detect larger organic molecules. SAM is Curiosity’s onboard mini-laboratory; it analyzes material from rock and soil samples. The result is a detection in the processed sample, not a direct observation of how the molecules formed or how they were originally arranged in the rock.

Why researchers discuss carboxylic acids
Laboratory experiments support the possibility that the detected alkanes were preserved originally as long-chain carboxylic acids and released as alkanes during analysis. That is a supported interpretation of the measurements, not a direct detection of intact long-chain fatty acids in Cumberland.

Does the finding prove life on Mars?
No. “Organic” in this context means carbon-containing; it does not mean biological. The 2025 study says the origin of the molecules remains uncertain. Geological processes can produce relevant fatty-acid-like compounds without life. NASA notes, for example, that water interacting with minerals in hydrothermal vents can form fatty acids.
NASA’s Curiosity research summary puts the significance cautiously: “While there’s no way to confirm that these long-chain alkanes resulted from biology, finding them provides hope that other large organic molecules, and specifically those created only by life (so-called ‘biosignatures’), could be preserved in ancient rocks on Mars.”

What the 2026 follow-up adds—and what it does not
A 2026 follow-up reports an abundance of 30–50 parts per billion (ppb) for the long-chain alkanes and possible carboxylic-acid precursors. It estimates that the material may have been more abundant before roughly 80 million years of exposure to ionizing radiation. These are the follow-up authors’ abundance and radiation-exposure estimates, not a measurement of ancient concentrations at the time the mudstone formed. The 2026 follow-up record discusses possible explanations but does not resolve the origin.
The authors consider more than one mechanism: organics transported from hydrothermal settings, and accumulation by a hypothetical ancient Martian biosphere. These remain proposed possibilities. Neither the reported molecules nor the follow-up’s estimates establish that either mechanism occurred.

What would help distinguish biological from geological origins?
The detection establishes that these molecules were present in the analyzed Cumberland material. To distinguish possible sources would require additional evidence that can discriminate between biological and abiotic formation, rather than the presence of carbon-containing molecules alone. This finding is important because it demonstrates preservation potential in ancient rocks, but it does not by itself settle whether life ever produced the compounds.
