UltiMaker Cura is a free, open-source slicer that converts a 3D model into printer-ready instructions. It can work with printers that have a suitable profile and output workflow, but it is not universally compatible and cannot guarantee a successful print. As of September 30, 2026, the latest stable release shown on the official release page is Cura 5.13.0.

What Cura does

A slicer prepares a model for a 3D printer by translating its geometry and print settings into instructions the printer can execute. Cura is a desktop graphical application for that preparation, not a printer or a model-design tool. The UltiMaker Cura repository describes it as a “state-of-the-art slicer app to prepare your 3D models for your 3D printer.”

UltiMaker advertises more than 400 customizable settings on its product page. That is a vendor-published feature count, not an independent measure of print quality or speed. The Cura project repository lists the software under the LGPL-3.0 license.

Which Cura version is current?

As of September 30, 2026, the official release listing identifies Cura 5.13.0 as the latest stable release. It also lists Cura 5.14.0-alpha.0, which is a pre-release rather than a stable version. UltiMaker announced Cura 5.13 on June 1, 2026.

Cura 5.13 introduced native support for the Factor 4 Plus with validated hardware profiles. Its release notes also report fixes involving tree supports, overhang and travel speeds, Raft and Support Lightning Infill conflicts, randomized infill behavior, sign-in, interface overlap, and some 3MF setting configurations. These are release-note descriptions, not independent print-performance test results. Printer and material profiles can change between releases, so check the release notes for the version you install.

Will Cura work with your 3D printer?

It depends on the printer profile and how the printer receives jobs. A profile must accurately describe the machine and its extruders; choosing a broadly similar printer is not proof of compatibility. Before relying on Cura for a particular printer, check these points:

  • Real-Time App Monitoring: Monitor print progress, adjust settings, and receive instant status alerts remotely with the Flash Studio. Smart mobile control ensures a seamless, effortless printing experience anytime, anywhere.
  • Profile: Look for an included profile or a reliable profile source for the exact printer model.
  • Firmware and output: Confirm that the printer’s firmware can use the output Cura generates and that your intended transfer method—such as a connected queue or removable media—fits the printer’s workflow.
  • Build volume and nozzle setup: Match the printer’s build dimensions and nozzle/extruder configuration. For multi-extrusion machines, account for the volume each nozzle can reach.
  • Material: Check that the chosen material and filament specifications are supported by the printer and represented appropriately in the profile.

Using a custom printer profile

If the printer make is not in Cura’s supported list and the Custom FDM Printer option does not provide the needed flexibility, UltiMaker documents a route for creating machine profiles. This involves machine definition and extruder definition files. Multi-extrusion configurations require particular care because each nozzle’s reachable volume affects the machine definition. Custom-profile capability means users can configure additional machines; it does not mean every printer has been validated or will work without accurate setup.

Access Install and use the desktop application. Use a browser-based interface.
Preparation and control UltiMaker recommends it for deep granular control. Load a model; move, scale, rotate, or multiply it; choose a printer configuration, material, and intent-based profile; adjust basic infill and support options; slice and inspect layers and toolpaths.
Printer and material choices Use the profile options available in the installed application; confirm suitability for the specific machine. Select from matched printer and material libraries; availability depends on those libraries.
Queueing and output Prepare output for the printer’s supported transfer workflow. Send a job to a connected printer queue or download the output for transfer.
Estimates Not stated in the cited desktop product information. Review estimated print time and material use.
Collaboration Not stated in the cited desktop product information. Associated with Digital Factory workflows; specific collaboration capabilities depend on the service and current plan.

For a non-networked printer, the cloud workflow can still produce a downloadable output for transfer, provided that output suits the printer. Digital Factory plans and pricing can change; consult UltiMaker’s current service page for details rather than relying on an older price or feature limit.

What Cura does not establish

A slicer’s settings and profiles help prepare a job, but successful printing also depends on the printer, material, calibration, and other conditions. UltiMaker’s feature descriptions and release notes do not establish a measured print-quality advantage over other slicers. No independent Cura benchmark or controlled comparison is established by the cited official materials.
